i run into kally at the base.
"terrence, we need a plan to overthrow tigris and since you are the most charming i think you need to be the spokesman," kally states as she walks in step with me. i smile wryly.
"anything else for me to go on?" i smile at the thought of kally having to be the spokesman. i think she might have died of embarrassment.
"jaden university values stats above anything else. they worship their stats, so i figure, we outdo the others," she smiles even wider. maybe she would have made a good spokesman.
"and i have news about the old guard," i comment turning around to make sure we're not being followed.
"great! did you finally find him!" kally sounds excited.
"they must have done the same thing to him they did to rose cummings," i shake my head as i look around subconsciously. in my peripheral i notice kally go pale.
"do you think they'll do that to everyone else in the picture?" she is going paler. i know this look, she's fearful. fearful of what?
"that's my best guess," i comment.
her body stiffens.
"kally, is there something you're not telling me?" i can't help but ask her. they look in her eye is so dark and helpless. she gulps and then clears her face of the emotion.
"no," she smiles but the smile can't punctuate her eyes all the way.
"so why do you think they're being targeted?" i ask. she puts a finger to her lips.
"follow me," and so we make our way onto our hoverboards and shoot off into the direction of the deep forest.
her hair is frizzier with tighter curls here. the forest is more humid than the other sections of space. she looks almost free when on her board. she moves this way and that around the trees, almost like she's dancing with them. and then she stops.
she gets off her board and looks around us hesitantly. but then she doesn't say anything. she just stands there frozen. i whisper in a voice so low others would think it was the wind.
"they killed my dad and ken's dad so i'm guessing they killed rose and that guy from the cabin, so tell me what do you know?" the words sound more forceful than i mean them to.
"do you know what killed them?" kally asks.
"it was a power depleter, the same thing that gave ken his disease," her eyes slightly widen but she doesn't say anything.
"that's what they called it too," she says in a sad small voice.
"who? who call it that?" my heart thuds wildly in my chest.
