kally and i have been tasked with recruiting members that will overthrow tigris for the position of boss to be given to kassie. kassie is making her way back towards the creatures to make more sense of what is happening in our world. the thought is strange. i've always known there is more but it was common to not ask. to not wonder. there was always the need to protect our world so there was never a reason to ask why.
kally is different than usual as we walk. she is more quiet. i've noticed the shift for a while now.
"kally," i ask while we hide along the outside of the building. i'm making a list of what each soldier does in her army to take down the strongest first. kally has been finding weak links in tigris' armor. everything so that kassie is set up for success when she's finally ready.
"what?" kally does not sound amused that i'm disturbing her work.
"why have you been acting different lately?" i ask. she gives me a long hard stare.
"have i," she asks rhetorically. "and how does that make you feel?"
i take it back. she's still a snake.
"i'll keep it to business," i put my hands up in surrender. i don't want her digging out my insides while i'm squatted down next to a slab of concrete.
"good choice," she smiles back cooly.
she has changed, maybe not to me but i know she has. she's softer than she was before. she wants good out of the world, that's what it feels like. it's so odd to watch her make these decisions when i know i'll be choosing the ones on the other side of the coin.
we make our way from building to building, flitting around assessing which would be the best members to recruit. there are a few students i've thought of but this is the first time we'll have to actually ask them.
"naftalie," kally hisses to me. i gulp. this is the first member we are going to try recruiting. slowly we make our way from the corner to the door of the room. she is standing in the room with a small group surrounding her. she chortles at something one of them says and then looks back towards the door. she sees us and a grin forms on her list.
"long time no see kally," her grin widens.
