I'm heading down the dirt hall when I hear it, a conversation I hoped I'd never hear. To say it breaks my heart would be an understatement. It shatters it into tangible little pieces. No matter what I was thinking before, this is not it. This is nothing to what I expected.
Kally leaves the room just like everyone else. She grabs Luke and wonders what he's going to do but it's me who finds him at the end of the hall, right next to the med bay.
"Tell me, give it to me straight, all of it," my grip on his arm is ice cold and I can see the pain flit across his face.
I shove him into the bathroom at the very back of the compound. I shove him against the sink.
"Tell me," I know I don't want to know this. I know this isn't what I want to hear. But I have to hear it.
"They're going to try and use a power depleter to kill Katie, it's how they got Rose Cummings," his brows are creased and I know the truth only gets worse from here. "Who made the order? Who told you to do this?" The temperature in the room sinks.
"Kassie," Luke doesn't want to say it. I can tell. Warm hot bile climbs up my esophagus.
"is she the one who killed Rose?" I can't keep the snarl out of my voice.
Luke shakes his head by but he doesn't say anything. I let the silence seep around the door frames, followed by lines of frost. We're alone in this room, I have every capability of killing him if he doesn't answer.
"I don't think so, someone in the government is calling the shots," he finally confesses.
"Who?" I can't keep the rage from spewing out.
"There's only one person that Kassie would kill for," I know he's right. I know he's right and somehow that makes this worse.
"It was Veronica, wasn't it? This whole time, it's Veronica," The mirror behind him cracks.
"She killed my dad, didn't she? Didn't she?" Heat, and rage and the cold roll around me.
"She gave the order, but I don't think she gets her hands dirty," now Luke sounds angry. He sounds as cold as the room surrounding him.
"I rigged the machine Terrence, I'm on your side," he crosses his arms begging me to negate him. "It's not right to kill people Terrence, and whatever she's killing them for, we need to know," His fists are clenched like rocks.
"You're with me on this?"
"How could I not? She's evil, and she's made Kassie into a monster as proof," he snarls, he sounds disgusted.
"So you agree we need to do something," I smirk sardonically.
"Who else is going to? They've had long enough," he sounds almost as mad as I am.
"They killed Ken's parents too, didn't they?" It comes out of my mouth like a manure through a pipe.
"Yeah, I have no doubt about it," and that's it. That's where this anger is from. I feel it off of him like I feel it in me.
"Guess you better go do your job," and I leave him there in the bathroom. I need to go kill someone.
