Summary:
Nick needs to have surgery and Charlie is there to help him recover
Notes:So quick disclaimer that I'm American, and I know that wisdom tooth removal isn't super common in the UK and that they usually don't use general anesthesia, but I hope I made the reasons vague enough that it still seems reasonable. Besides, this is fanfic, I can do what I want.
Also, this is technically canon compliant with the show, but there is some divergence from what happens in the comics
TW: vague and brief mentions of Charlie's ED and mental health problems, reference to his breakdown in Solitaire, mentions of blood and saliva after the surgery
(See the end of the work for more notes.)Work Text:
Nick swore that he had the worst luck in the world. Well actually before today, he never would have sworn such a thing. He was quite content with his life, generally speaking, especially since he met a certain Charlie Spring. But this felt like a cruel joke. He and his boyfriend had a whole plan for the spring holiday—which included spending every possible second together, and not much else. But still, it was a plan, and it was now ruined. By his own bloody teeth, no less. His mouth had been hurting and his jaw had been sore for a couple weeks, and he probably would have continued to ignore it for several weeks more if Charlie hadn't noticed him wince as they made out. Charlie had been deepening their kiss, pressing against Nick with a strength that no longer surprised him, one hand clutching his shirt, the other cupping his cheek gently, when he let out an involuntary pained noise. The smaller boy had immediately pulled back, his face etched with concern as Nick fought back a grimace, trying to play it off.
"What's wrong?" Charlie asked worriedly.
"It's nothing," Nick replied, leaning back in for another kiss.
"Nick Nelson," Charlie said sternly as he pulled back enough to look in his eyes. "Tell the truth."
"It's just a toothache, Char, really. Now, can I please kiss you again."
Charlie narrowed his eyes in suspicion. "Open your mouth."
"That's what I want you to do," Nick said in what he hoped was a flirty tone, but his boyfriend just rolled his eyes.
Charlie grabbed Nick's jaw and gave his cheeks a squeeze that surprised a laugh out of him, allowing the younger boy to get a brief glimpse inside his mouth. "Nick!" he gasped out.
"What?" the older boy asked desperately, the shock of his boyfriend making him anxious.
Charlie tugged his chin down so his mouth was open once more and peered inside. "You have a wisdom tooth coming in and your gum is all red."
"Are you sure?" Nick asked, as best he could with his mouth still open.
Charlie gave him a deadpanned look. "I am kind of an expert on the inside of your mouth by now, Nicolas."
Nick flushed a deep red color, all his freckles disappearing in it as he scratched the back of his neck abashedly. "Does this mean we can go back to kissing now?"
Charlie wrinkled his nose cutely. "Ew no."
"Why not?" Nick asked pleadingly, knowing he was using what Charlie referred to as his 'puppy dog eyes' but unashamed to be doing so. Desperate times and all that.
"Cause you might be... infected or something," Charlie said with a vague wave of his hand.
"Infected?" It was Nick's turn to raise a skeptical eyebrow as his boyfriend blushed.
