Part 19

John b pulls up to the house and I get out. I look up at it taking a deep breath before walking in.
"Hello?" I ask as I walk in
"Hey. Thank you for showing up. Good work" rafe says clapping
"Please stop" I tell him
"Thank you." He says
"I don't wanna argue. We already have enough people against us. Kiera mentioned...that you might be able to help." I say
"Uh no. No not with the land stuff. You guys are on your own with that. Sorry. But there's... there's something else I wanted to talk to you about. So when... dad died. The first time" rafe says and I sit down

"Um he said I got a quarter of what he had." He tells me
"Yeah he said I got a quarter too." I say
"But you didn't get it, did you?" He asks me
"No" I answer realizing I never did
"Yeah well good luck trying to get that from roses greedy paw. She's got that money locked down tight." He tells me
"I keep trying to call. She won't even let me talk to wheezie." I tell him
"Yes yes that's what I'm saying. I mean we're a family and I'm not-I'm not even allowed to talk to my own sister? And then rose she just gets to keep all that gold for herself. I mean, what gives her the right? I mean that's not what dad intended. That's not what dad wanted. And it pisses me off" he says getting louder and slamming something onto the table in front of him, I flinch every time he does.
"That's our money ok?" He says finally stopping and I let out a sigh

"I don't know about you but I really I need that money." He tells me
"And what about the gold cross you stole?" I ask him
"It was gold-plated. It was a good score. It's not endless. It's not like the merchant gold, so." He tells me
"So sorry to hear that" I mumble
"I don't know I was just thinking um, you know you and me, we try to get wheezie back." He says standing up
"How?" I ask him
"I don't know how. And then, we try to get the money back" he says sitting on the table in front of me

"Which is why we need to work together. Just like dad taught us, we align our interests. And I just thought you and me, we can get back what's ours. Look I'm trying here-" he tells me but I couldn't anymore
"No no. I'm sorry" I tell him walking out

"Let's go." I tell John b getting in the car
"How did it go?" He asks
"It's Rafe. Can't trust him." I answer
"Ok, let's rally the troops" he says

We spent the rest of the day trying to get as many people as possible to come help support us. And by the time we hopefully got enough, it was time.

I hold John b's hand as we walk, kie next to me.
"I'm gonna go say hey to my parents" kie tells us
"Ok" I nod as she walks off

As we start to walk in we see topper walking in too.
"Hey topper, can I talk to you-" I start to say but I get cut off by his mom
"Oh no honey my son has nothing to say to you" she tells me
"Good luck sticking it to the man." Ruthie toppers girlfriend says
