Pure humans.

Mixed ones.

And hybrids.

Pure humans were the definition of their calling. No mixed blood whatsoever. A pure race.

Hybrids were half-human and half-animals. They could shift into their animal form, has stronger abilities either physical or psychological than humans. They were superior in every aspect except their number. They represented one third of the earth population. Only a third was not enough for domination. However, unlike pure humans, hybrids were not looking for supremacy.

Thus, the territory was split into. Eventually, hybrids and pure humans love was also exposed to the world giving birth to mixed ones. Either humans with hybrid blood, or hybrids with human characteristics. The first were unable to shift while the second could. Mixed ones weren't accepted in society at first, but after dozens of years they represented more than a quarter of the population; forcing purists to accept the reality.

Mixed ones could choose were to live. And eventually, a quarter became a third...then two thirds. Only to finally reach 85% of the population. Pure humans still existed. Hybrids still existed. However, the government decided to abolish the remaining fifteen percent of the population by creating matching events. Every 5 years, pure humans of age went to Hybrid universities to study and to find a partner. A life partner, whether hybrid or mixed one. Pure humans had to disappear. For the discrimination to end.

"Here is your apartment." My brother smiled.

My older brother, Raphael Bridge, had found his happiness in a charming hummingbird hybrid. She was extremely shy, but her voice was the sweetest. I really liked Charline Hummingbird.

"I did the decoration." She whispered in a low shy voice.

The green and lilac colors were exactly to my image. A huge painting of forest was facing the bed. I loved it. I approached the woman and opened my arms to welcome her in a hug. She accepted the hug. A true hybrid herself, like every hybrid, predator, or prey, she liked physical contact. That was exactly the way hybrids communicated their emotions.

"I love it." I whispered honestly. She hugged me a tiny bit tighter. Raphael smiled widened.

Although we were pure humans, our parents were not part of the extremist faction. When I graduated from my first year of university as the valedictorian, my parents asked me. If like my brother, I wanted to cross the border to Arlan, the hybrid centered city and where the best university was. I agreed without a second thought. Nevertheless, I was excited by the classes and not by finding a partner.

"Are you already settled in dear?"

I bowed my head to the matriarch of the prey faction. Charline's mother. She lightly tapped my shoulder and gave an affectionate hug to her son-in law. My brother, who was 6 years older than me, didn't hesitate to ask Charline in marriage as he got his stable for as an informatician in the Min Company. One of the most famous companies there was in Arlan or any other city concerning cybersecurity.

It was a grandiose event. My parents had received a permanent access to Arlan and so did I. Even though we were pure humans.

"Don't bow to me, child. You are part of our family." She smiled at me "Charline, you did a wonderful job on her bedroom. It is a bit...small." She was used to living in a quite luxurious house.

"I love it. I don't mind the size." It was more than necessary in fact. A bedroom, a separated bathroom, a living room with a all-equipped kitchen.

I wanted to live alone. After 22 years living with my parents, I wanted my freedom. I could have joined the newlyweds' home or even Charline's family home like the matriarch had proposed, but I had politely declined. Introverted by heart, I liked to have my own space. Working part-time and already having connections with hybrids, I found this apartment with ease. It was a 15-minute walk from Arlan's college and 5 minutes by bus. A real treasure.
