Espers.
A rare type of people. People with extraordinary abilities. People with powers too strong too withhold.
Stronger than a bear.
Smarter than Einstein.
As powerful as a nuclear bomb.
It was only right to compare Espers and ticking bombs. Both of them could explode. Espers often lost control of their abilities and became berserk. Loosing all reason and killing everything that is moving. Only blood traces left behind a berserker.
"Elina, you're alright?" Camilla asked me. I looked up from my laptop. The latest article about Espers retraced their story since the beginning. Before, Guides were even discovered. When only murder could ease their rage, when Espers were a target to kill.
"I was reading something about the story of Espers." I smile, changing to what I shold actually be doing at work. "I wasn't too excited to write about my results, honestly."
"It's not working out?" She didn't add the 'again', but I could hear it in her sentence.
"Boss isn't satisfied." It was the only polite answer that came to my mind after an hour of arguing with him. Five months since I started my doctorate and I could not wait for the three long years to be over. Fortunately, I had made great friends quickly within my colleagues.
"The Guide formation is starting soon." Camilla changed the subject. We had never talked about that topic. I stared at her silently. It was only both of us in the office, since it was so early in the morning.
"You're going?" I eluded her implicit question wanting her to answer first.
"I am." She smiled "I know that you are also a Guide. I can feel it." Guides could recognize each other. The special ability of guiding Espers. A task given randomly at birth to girls mostly. I knew very few male guides. Camilla was a guide only in her manner of breathing. Her kindness and how she listened to others clearly betrayed her. In our contract as doctorate, it was mandatory to mention if you were an Esper or a Guide. While Espers couldn't recognize Guides expect through touch, Guides could feel Espers near them.
As a side gift from Guiding, I also knew their ability. If I focused hardly enough, it appeared as a writing on top of their head. I knew no other Guides who had this ability. As I kept silent, Camilla squeezed my shoulder.
"They are quite a bit of Espers in the building." She remarked.
"Are you uncomfortable with that?" I questioned intrigued by the answer.
"I'm not. I don't mind." She shrugged "I wanted to ask if you wanted to go to the formation together. I have never employed my guiding abilities and I'm quite curious."
"Never?" I was surprised.
"I was diagnosed as a Guide three years ago. Weren't you?"
"I was 16." I bit my lips quietly "I bumped into an Esper." And my orld was turned around. I had been employed as a helping guide before being thrown away for being useless. I had never dreamed of being a guide. As such a young age, when you tell a young girl, that she can help the battle against crime; obviously she's overjoyed.
"You don't seem overhyped." Camilla leaned against my table.
"I worked for the ECI before, but I was...let go of." It was a sweet manner to say the harsh truth. I didn't mind too much, but Camilla hugged me.
"It has changed, especially since Mr. Wright came to power." Justice Wright, one of the most powerful Mind Esper of this world. He was the kind of person that knew your darkest secret without even needing eye contact. A fearless man that had completely changed the ECI.
