My decision wasn't final. Truthfully, I don't want to be the President of Dawnlens Corporation. But I'm left with no other option. I am Dad's sole heir; in our family, I am the only child who can step into his shoes.
"Ano'ng ibig mong.. sabihin?" she asked, sounding slightly puzzled and anxious. Maybe she sensed that I truly don't want to take on that role.
I looked at her intently, "I don't have a choice, Andrea. For the sake of my family, for the sake of the company, I will do it."
I will damn well do it.
"I am taking over my father's position as the President of Dawnlens Company."
To claim that I have convinced myself to take on a responsibility I was uncertain about was the most courageous act on my part. I'm not even sure if I'm ready, but I have to fulfill that role at this moment because the company needs its leader.
"Thank you. Any objections?"
I wish to hear any dissent right now, but it seems they have too much faith in me. They believe in my capability to assume the presidential role.
Seriously, where did they even see the potential in me?
They were all staring at me here in the conference room. They had expectations of me. And I'm... I'm genuinely being unfair to them.
'How can they trust me so completely?'
"Hearing none, the motion passes unanimously." the Board Chairman finally smiled, "Congratulations, Breydon D'Louvières. You have our full support in your new role as preside-"
"No!"
I was tuned into the loud pounding of my heart when suddenly I heard my brother's voice.
"S-Stop the meeting!" he gasped as if he had just sprinted a thousand miles.
Well, yeah. He just interrupted the meeting.
"Bentley." I addressed him, "Why are you halting the meeting?" I asked in confusion.
He didn't respond, just came closer to me and grasped my shoulders.
Damn. He looked so serious. What the hell happened?
"Breydon." he gazed at me intently, "Dad is.."
'Fuck.'
"Dad is awake."
••
"Now that he's conscious, we'll begin the process of assessing his cognitive and physical functions to determine the next steps in his recovery."
Is this even real? Dad's actually awake now? He's... finally awakened from his prolonged slumber.
"Is he truly okay now?" Mom inquired, gently stroking Dad's hand. She's really crying right now. Just like Bentley and Bryce, they did shed tears for a while.
And me? I... shed a tear. Just a tiny bit.
Bryce smiled, "We're cautiously optimistic. There will be hurdles ahead, and he'll need rehabilitation. But waking up is a significant milestone for Dad."
Dad has been extremely silent since he woke up. He's just observing us, just listening to Bryce. Maybe he's still recuperating from his sleep.
"Oh, God. I'm relieved you're really awake now, honey." Mom looked at him, "How are you feeling?"
Dad stared at her for a while; there was a long pause before he finally spoke.
"I'm fine." he said in a serious tone.
