Jennie sat inside a small coffee shop sipping her iced coffee as her mom sat across from her sipping her own cup of hot tea.
"Mom, you have to help me. I have a wedding to plan and I cannot for the life of me figure out a way to get started. Everyone knows you throw quite a party."
Mama Kim finished her tea and set her cup aside. "To be honest Jennie, throwing a party might very well be the only thing I was ever good at."
Jennie frowned. "I don't believe that for a moment." She said with a smile. "Lisa's been pestering me, or well, I shouldn't say pestering really, but I know that she wants to start planning things despite the fact that we won't be getting married until February or April next year, but everytime she asks me what I want, I just don't have an answer."
Her mom sat back in her chair, hands folded together properly in her lap. Jennie could see her pondering what to say next, and with her, no one knew what it could be. She fiddled with the straw of her cup for a moment, her attention brought back when her mom began to speak again. "You've never been an extravagant girl - and you know I don't mean that in a condescending way."
"I'm not." Jennie replied. "I've never really been over the top with anything, except my emotions, maybe." She laughed, sipping the last of her coffee. "I also know that tradition is important to you, so I want to kind of find a way to maybe not go completely over the top but also kind of find a way to blend it all together."
Nodding, Mama Kim clasped her hands together. "I'm sure we can figure out a way to have a simple, yet elegant wedding. However, may I ask...why the long engagement? If it's because of me - "
"You were a smalle part in it." Jennie confessed. "But it's mostly me. I'm sure if Lisa had her way we'd be married by Easter. But I still have a lot to figure out with me, and our relationship evolved rather quickly."
Mama Kim nodded, her lips turning upward. "Everything happens for a reason, or so they say. I've come to embrace that saying when I think of you and Lisa. I never thought I'd be in a place where I could watch my own daughter maker her own choice. It's been an adjustment. I'm proud to see that you know how to make the right ones. Lisa - is one of those choices."
"Thank you mom." Jennie replied. "I appreciate you saying that."
"I'm also glad she didn't give you any family ring." Mama Kim admitted. "Lisa made the right decision. This ring is more beautiful, and suits you better than a family ring. I remember when Kai gave it to you. I thought he was kidding. But he wasn't."
Jennie rubbed her thumb agains the band of her engagement ring. "I rarely see you wore jewelry. Your ring was the only piece I ever remember you wearing. I have a necklace and a bracelet at home - both of which came from Lisa. I told her the other day she has to find something different to give me the next time a holiday comes around because I'm just not a person who coordinates jewelry with my outfits."
"That's the best thing about diamonds," her mom said with an airy laugh. "They coordinate with everything."

THUNK. THUNK. THUNK. THUNK. THUNK.
"Eun-woo, sweetheart..."
THUNK. THUNK.
"Can you please play with something a little quieter?" Lisa asked softly, sinking deeper into the sofa.
