Melinda
Returning to the place I once called home.
"Off with their heads!"
"Death to the traitors!"
"Shame! Shame to all who dared to harm the Empress!"
"They're not so haughty now with their heads hung low, are they? Send them to the divines for judgment!"
"It's about time justice is served for these aristocrats!"
"No longer will we stand quietly while they look down on us!"
Today marked the execution of those who had planned my assassination. It was long-awaited, likely more so by the commoners than by me. They were eager to see justice served to those who wished me harm, and I was touched by their fervor. The plan was to carry out the executions immediately after sentencing, but the royal schedule, especially with hosting foreign dignitaries, had been too packed.
With the recent impromptu trip to Xuegate in Phora with Enos, we could delay no longer. The people were growing agitated. Today, the traitors would see the light of Aikean's day for the last time.
Much had already been done to shame those involved. Their homes, assets, and titles were confiscated, and their names sullied in the press and history books. They were made to walk the streets of Vesneau one last time so the common people could see the faces of those who betrayed the crown. Once the executions concluded, their heads would line the gates of the front palace as a warning to any future traitors.
Kiraz and I sat in our designated seats as the traitors lined up, their charges about to be read before their execution.
"Are you comfortable, Lavee?" Kiraz asked, reaching for my hand and placing a subtle kiss against my skin.
"Yes, why wouldn't I be?" I replied.
"I suppose seeing such a sight isn't pleasant," He said, kissing my hand again. "You are pregnant with our child; you should only see good things."
I scoffed, "I want to see their heads roll, but I appreciate the concern."
He chuckled, "I guess covering your eyes is out of the question?"
"I will smack your hand away," I said simply.
He smiled. "At least you're honest." He cleared his throat, growing serious. "Would you like to make a speech before it begins?"
"No, speak on my behalf. I tend to confuse people with my words," I replied.
He nodded and stood, commanding the attention of those who watched us from the balcony.
Kiraz approached the voice amplification device as the footman commanded silence from the spectators. "Good afternoon, honorable citizens of the Empire of Vesneau. I greet you humbly and thank you for your continuous support during the trial and conviction of these traitors," he began, his voice echoing throughout the streets. The people listened intently.
