Melinda

A pampered lady is expected.

"Grandmother... why do you despise my mother so much?"

Shock had immediately riddled the body of the poised and elegant Duchess of Bria, it was a sight to behold. She rarely passed the features of someone who did a lot of expressional thinking through the face, but at this moment it was clear she was quite flabbergasted by my sudden comment on her relationship with her daughter-in-law.

I had meant to ask her this sooner, but the opportunity never arose. Our paths did not cross much due to my hefty learning schedule these days, so there was difficulty in setting a time to have tea with her. Though after yesterday's events, I was now enthralled with getting to the bottom of the animosity towards what seemed like two very similar women in high society.

"I beg your pardon? Lavania! What would make you say such a thing?" She questioned me with a stern declaration.

I pursed my lips in confusion. Had I read her wrong? I didn't think I did. After all, it was just yesterday when a letter regarding the renovations to the city estate had come in from father as well as plethora of other things such as gifts and sweets that he knew I loved dearly; I got a letter from him telling me how much he missed me and couldn't wait to show me what he had done to my wing and area of the home so I could be as comfortable as possible. I missed him. It was not an emotion I was terribly used to articulating unless it was someone like Andrew who had essentially become my comfort piece from the time we were infants.

But despite the fact that good things came from my package of goodies from my father. The plans that father had promised to send to mother for approval had also come in. She seemed excited as she had been waiting on this for a while as it had been delayed due to further extensive renovations; it was mentioned they were also upgrading some of the furnishings as well as new and innovative appliances to speed up food preparation and household maintenance.

Mother had the opportunity to select the change in curtain style, colors, materials, in accordance to the type of furniture, light fixtures via the luminous crystals that were imported as well as a plethora of things; I could tell these kinds of opportunities made her happy as her smile was prominent reading the letter. But as soon as she began making decisions for the floor plans of the estate, grandmother interjected multiple times stating her opinion and how my mother's tastes were far too modern for this day and age and how she'd prefer this color to that.

At that point, they both had gotten into a fuss, so much that grandfather had to intervene and remind grandmother that she does not reside at the Skellace Estate and if she wanted to renovate the Glavxker Manor she was free to do so as they were not short on expenses here. She didn't take a liking to that response and huffed away to her private study to cool off I suppose.

Mother then happily sauntered off with the remainder of the plans, Nanny Addel in tow as they spoke about the big changes coming to the city residence.

I felt no way about that, in particular, I just found it interesting the dynamic they had between each other as this was the first time I was experiencing it. My former mother never got married so there was never a mother-in-law to have strife with, but at times the colleagues that I worked with did have a bit of banter in regards to their significant other's parents that left me out of the loop as I simply listened to their many encounters with what they called "banshees from hell".
