1:45 AM
Entering his apartment, Iguro rushed her into his room and quickly locked the door. He helped her sit on the couch before hurrying to the bathroom, where he turned on the lights and adjusted the shower to warm. Feeling cold himself, he removed his wet shirt and wrapped himself in the nearest towel. He returned to Mitsuri, who was still shaking and out of it. Her mind seemed elsewhere, and she could only follow along with what he told her to do.
Kneeling in front of her, he gently removed her sneakers and her drenched socks, feeling how cold her feet were, like ice, which only fueled his anger. He looked up and saw her eyes filled with sadness, her gaze distant. He knew he had to keep it together for both of them.
"Hey, I'm sorry, but can you take off your clothes?" he asked softly, removing his jacket from her shoulders. He gently took her cat from her arms, placing it on his bed, where it crawled under the sheets for warmth.
Mitsuri slowly began to regain her senses, blushing as she wasn't sure if she was ready to undress in front of him yet.
"I promise I won't look at you," he reassured her, "but you're going to get worse if you don't take something off. You can leave your clothes on in the shower if you want, just get in the warm water, okay?" He offered his hand to help her up, noticing her shivering and teeth chattering from the cold.
After a moment, she took his hand and stood. She began to remove her clothes, leaving only her undergarments. He passed her his towel to cover herself as he slowly guided her to the bathroom. As the warm water ran down her hair and body, Mitsuri covered her face and started crying again.
Iguro stood outside the door, frustrated and angry at the situation. He blamed himself for not acting sooner, but their relationship hadn't allowed it. He pulled out clean clothes from his dresser and laid them on the bed, then gathered her wet clothes and put them in the washing machine. Trying not to make noise, he put a pot of water on for tea. Leaning on the stove, he thought about her ordeal—searching for her cats, walking in on her ex with his cousin. His mind raced, trying to piece together what had happened. They must have met at the party, but why?
The sound of the shower running through the room pulled him back to the present. He thought of how she had sounded on the phone—scared and nervous. When she had called at 11:50 PM, she didn't know where she was, and he had left work early to find her, using the vague description she gave.
He took a deep breath, trying to control his anger. He couldn't afford to show it in front of her. Just then, Rengoku, his roommate, popped out of his room, his hair messy and only wearing boxers.
"Hey, you're shaking," Rengoku noted, approaching him.
Iguro's face hardened, and he gave him a sharp look. The shower sounds must have made him think something else was going on.
"Sorry, man, just wanted to see what was making noise," Rengoku said, backing off.
Iguro took another breath, calming himself down. "I'm fine, don't worry." He squeezed the water out of his wet hair. "Mitsuri is here. Something happened at her place, so she'll stay with me until we figure things out."
The tea kettle began to whistle, signaling it was done. Iguro poured the hot water into two cups, adding tea bags and honey.
"Is she okay?" Rengoku asked, his voice filled with concern.
Iguro looked at him, wondering why he seemed so worried. "Physically, yes. Mentally... not really." He shot Rengoku a pointed look before returning to his room, carrying the tea and closing the door with his foot, leaving Rengoku in the kitchen.
After setting the tea on the coffee table, Iguro began unbuttoning his pants when he heard Mitsuri faintly call his name. He went to the bathroom, careful to avoid looking directly at her, and asked, "Do you want me to leave the shower on for you?"
Mitsuri noticed he wasn't looking at her. Despite her situation, she couldn't help but notice his shirtless body, his pants undone, revealing the waistband of his boxers and his tattoo. She blushed.
"No, I'm fine. I'll shower tomorrow," he replied, rummaging through the cabinet for a towel, still keeping his gaze away from her.
Mitsuri stepped out of the shower, wrapped the towel around herself, and took his hand. Iguro turned to face her, noticing her puffy eyes filled with concern.
"Please, take a quick shower," she said softly, her voice trembling. "I don't want you to get sick either."
Iguro found himself lost in her beauty for a moment, then nodded. Before heading to the bathroom, he guided her back to his room, where clean clothes were waiting for her. "There's tea at the table. I won't take long."
As he walked back to the bathroom, Mitsuri remembered her undergarments on the floor. She went to pick them up, but before she could, she saw Iguro's naked body through the glass shower door. She blushed, quickly turning away, unable to stop her thoughts.
After putting on his clothes, she sat on the couch, sipping the tea he had made for her. Looking out at the pouring rain, Mitsuri began to cry again. On one hand, she was relieved to be free from her ex, but on the other, she felt sad about how everything had happened. For now, she was homeless with only the clothes on her back and her oldest cat, Chichi, curled up beside her.
A few minutes later, Iguro emerged from the bathroom, wrapped in a towel. She quickly looked away, blushing again. He dressed and sat next to her, smiling.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, gently holding her hand, still cold.
"A lot better, thanks," she replied, looking down at her tea, trying to compose herself.
"It's late. Let's get some sleep and talk tomorrow. You can take the bed, I'll sleep on the couch."
"No, I should sleep on the couch," she suggested nervously.
Iguro chuckled. "You're my girlfriend. You should sleep on the bed."
Surprised by his response, she obeyed and walked over to the bed. As she lay down, the sound of rain and thunder filled the room. She turned and saw Iguro without a blanket, worried he might be cold. She walked over and gently poked his hip.
"If you're my boyfriend, then why don't you sleep with me?" she whispered.
Iguro hesitated, unsure of what to do. "I won't do anything, I just... don't want to be alone," she added softly.
After a moment, Iguro got up and joined her in the bed. They slipped under the thick comforter together. It felt awkward at first, but Mitsuri snuggled close to him. He could still feel her shivering.
"Are you still cold?" he asked quietly.
She nodded, her body trembling.
"Do you want to do skin-to-skin? It'll help. I promise I won't do anything," he whispered.
After thinking for a few seconds, she agreed. Both of them removed their shirts. Mitsuri's back was facing him as she shyly removed her layers, keeping her chest hidden. Iguro smiled at how cute she was, and they lay back down, covered by the comforter.
"Can I come closer?" he asked. She nodded, and he scooted closer, their bodies pressed together in a gentle embrace. Iguro wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his head against her shoulder, their fingers interlocking. Her tears began to flow again, and Iguro held her tighter.
"I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm sorry I wasn't there for you sooner. But I promise you'll never go through that again. I'll never hurt you."
His words soothed her, and soon after, they both fell into a deep slumber.
