Chapter Song:  Dosii - "Maniac"

Next Day

The police department was dimly lit, the cold white glare of the overhead lamps flickering every so often. Obanai, Sanemi, Mitsuri, and Kanae stepped into the precinct, their expressions grim and voices low as they made their way toward Officer Hasegawa's desk. The air was thick, not just with the sterile scent of office equipment but with the unspoken weight of what they had come to discuss.

Hasegawa glanced up as they approached. His face was lined with exhaustion, his eyes shadowed by too many late nights and unsolved cases. He gestured for them to sit.

"I take it this isn't a social visit," he said, his voice rough but not unkind.

Obanai didn't waste time. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a flash drive and placing it on the desk. "We have more proof. It's a small video captured in the girls apartment of Doma dressed in a maintenance suit. His smile is enough to confirm it's him."

Hasegawa plugged the drive into his computer, and the group leaned in as the footage began to play. The shaky video showed the dimly lit living room. At first, it was quiet—just an empty apartment with faint sounds of life coming from the main door as it was the apartment manager and a maintenance worker.

Doma.

Or rather, a version of him. He was dressed in a maintenance worker's uniform, a medium length black wig hiding his distinct blonde hair. He walked with an unsettling ease, as if he belonged there, before stopping at a camera mounted in the corner. Slowly, he turned to face it, his eerie grin breaking across his face like a jagged crack.

Mitsuri shuddered, her hand gripping Kanae's. "Why is he smiling like that?" she whispered.

Kanae didn't answer. Her eyes were fixed on the screen as Doma reached from where the router box was sitting and yanked one of the wires from the router, cutting connection. The screen went to static.

"That's all we got," Obanai said, his voice low. "He disconnected the connection after this. No sound, no more footage. But it's enough to use against him."

Hasegawa stared at the frozen image of Doma's face, his jaw tightening. "This bastard..." he muttered under his breath.

"Also," Sanemi began, his voice like a blade cutting through the tension. His fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. "We think he's connected to my father's death."

Hasegawa's eyes flicked up to meet Sanemi's. He hesitated for a moment before speaking. Hasegawa's eyes lingered on the footage before shifting to Sanemi. "We don't have any proof that Doma was behind your father's death, but I believe Doma was there. Everything about this points to him."

Sanemi's fists hit the table, startling everyone. "Why the hell was he alone that night?" His voice rose sharply, cutting through the room like glass shattering. "He was a deputy. He should've had backup. Where was everyone else?"

The question seemed to hang in the air, unanswered, until Hasegawa gave Sanemi a strange, almost pitying look. "You... you don't know?"

Sanemi's sharp glare met Hasegawa's confusion. "Know what?"

Hasegawa hesitated, his brows furrowing as he tried to piece together Sanemi's ignorance. "Your father was sent on temporary leave till further notice that day."

Sanemi froze, his expression darkening. "What are you talking about?"

Hasegawa leaned forward, lowering his voice as though afraid the truth might echo too far. "Former Chief Shinjuro Rengoku came into the precinct the same day your father died. He brought evidence—evidence of your family's abuse at your father's hands. He showed it to the head chief and demanded an investigation. Your father was put on leave without pay until they could look into it further. An order was placed for him to stay away from your family till the investigation was completed."
