Same Day
As the evening train rumbled along, Kanae and Shinobu sat together, watching the world pass by through the windows. They had spent the previous night helping at their parents' clinic, balancing family duty with college internship hours. Now, they were catching up on life and relationships as they headed back home.
"I'm just so tired of this back and forth games," Kanae admitted softly, glancing down at her hands. "Sanemi so uugghh! I can't even put it to words! He doesn't talk to me about what's really going on, and... I feel like I'm all alone all the time."
Shinobu gave her a sympathetic look. "Have you tried asking him directly?"
Kanae shook her head. "He shuts down every time I bring it up. I just wish I could understand why."
Just then, she noticed a familiar figure at the end of the train car: Genya, Sanemi's younger brother, was sitting by himself, earphones in, seemingly lost in his own world. A thought flickered across Kanae's mind—maybe Genya knew something. Maybe he could help her understand Sanemi better.
Shinobu, noticing Kanae's gaze, leaned over and whispered with a smile, "You should talk to him. Maybe if you invite him out for drinks, He might open up a bit."
Kanae considered it, then nodded. "Alright. I'll see you at home?"
"Of course," Shinobu replied, giving her sister a reassuring squeeze on the arm.
Kanae made her way over to Genya and, gathering a bit of courage, reached out and tapped his shoulder. Genya turned, startled, pulling out one earphone as he looked up at her with wide eyes.
"K-Kanae!" he stammered, his cheeks coloring slightly.
She gave him a warm, friendly smile. "Hey, Genya. Mind if I join you?"
He nodded shyly, shifting in his seat as she sat down beside him. After a moment of silence, she decided to put him at ease. "You don't have to be so shy around me, you know. Pretty soon, I might be family," she teased lightly, hoping to ease his nervousness. "Sanemi could be marrying me before you know it!"
Genya's eyes widened at her words, and a bit of a smile tugged at his lips. "Really?"
Kanae laughed. "Well, I certainly hope so! We have been dating since highschool. But you know... sometimes it's hard to tell what he's thinking. He keeps a lot to himself."
