The room was silent, the stillness heavy with unspoken tension. Sanemi stood near the foot of Kanae's bed, his posture rigid, his eyes fixed on her pale, fragile face. Beside Kanae, her parents stood close to her bedside, their emotions etched deeply into their expressions. Kanae's father's sharp gaze immediately zeroed in on him, disapproval etched deeply into his features, though he remained silent.
Sanemi instinctively keeping his distance. He lingered at the edge, watching as Kanae's mother leaned over to gently stroke her daughter's hair. Her fingers trembled as she whispered a silent prayer, and even Kanae's father, his stern expression unwavering, couldn't hide the softening in his eyes as he took in the sight of his injured child.
For a brief moment, the air was heavy with shared concern, the tension momentarily dissolved by their love for Kanae. But Sanemi couldn't look away. From where he stood, his gaze remained locked on her pale, fragile face, her bandaged head a stark reminder of how close he'd come to losing her.
He wanted to promise her parents that he would keep her safe, that he would give his life if it meant protecting hers. But before he could say a word, Kanae's father's eyes dropped to her hand, the engagement ring gleaming faintly against the soft hospital light.
"You proposed to her without our blessing?" her father growled, his voice cutting through the room like a blade. He stepped closer, his finger jabbing toward the ring. "You had no right—none—to go behind our backs. What kind of man does that?"
"Please," Kanae's mother murmured, her voice strained, but her husband ignored her.
"Unacceptable," he barked. "You're not marrying her! I won't allow it—You will never be with Kanae ever again."
Sanemi's jaw clenched, his fists tightening at his sides. His head slowly lifted, his eyes blazing as he took a deliberate step forward.
"You think you can stop me?" he asked, his voice low, trembling with restrained fury. "You dare to take me away from my family?"
"Sanemi," Kanae's mother said softly, but her words didn't reach him.
"I've fought for her," Sanemi continued, his voice rising, his wounded arm trembling as he gestured toward her bed. "I've bled for her. Faced death for her. And you—" He pointed at Kanae's father, his chest heaving with emotion. "You think you can take her away from me because you're her father?! She's a grown woman, an adult! She can make her own decisions, and now that she's carrying our child, you don't have any rights to keep me away from my fiancé and my child!"
Kanae's father took an involuntary step back, stunned by the raw intensity of Sanemi's words.
"Sanemi," Kanae's mother tried again, her hand on her husband's arm, but he still didn't respond.
And then, from the bed, a soft, groggy sound broke through the rising tension.
Everyone froze.
Sanemi turned so quickly it was as if he'd forgotten anyone else was in the room. "Kanae," he whispered, rushing to her side. His earlier fury vanished in an instant, replaced by a desperation that softened his entire frame.
Her eyelids fluttered, and her lips parted as though struggling to form words. Her hand twitched against the blanket, weak but unmistakably alive.
"I'm here," Sanemi said, his voice trembling. He knelt at her bedside, leaning closer. "I'm here, Kanae. You're safe now."
Her eyes opened slowly, her vision blurred but locking onto the familiar face hovering above her. A faint, exhausted smile graced her lips. "Sanemi..." she murmured, her voice barely a whisper.
