Chapter Song: a vow - "as the light fades"
______
The scene unraveled with agonizing slowness, each second dragging like an eternity. Obanai's eyes blinked open, his vision blurred and unfocused, the world around him shifting in and out of clarity. A searing pain throbbed in his stomach, radiating through his body, but the ache in his chest was far worse—a deep, gnawing despair that clawed at his very soul.

The sharp strobe of the ambulance's lights cut through the haze, casting flickering shadows across the bloodied floor. Voices buzzed around him, paramedics shouting orders and scrambling to stabilize the scene, but the sounds were muffled, distant, like they were coming from another world.

Obanai's mind fought against the fog of unconsciousness, his body barely able to respond. Yet, through the chaos, his gaze searched desperately, frantically, until it landed on her.

Mitsuri.

She lay a few feet away, her vibrant pink and green hair now streaked with crimson, her face pale and still. Blood seeped from her wound, pooling beneath her. She looked so fragile, so heartbreakingly fragile, like a porcelain doll on the verge of shattering.

The sight drove a dagger of raw agony into Obanai's chest. His breath hitched, his lips parting to call out to her, but his voice was nothing more than a hoarse whisper. "Mitsuri..."

The name cracked as it left his lips, lost in the cacophony of the scene around him. He tried to move, to reach for her, but his body refused to obey. Pain screamed through every nerve, binding him to the floor as if the weight of his own failure was pinning him down.

Paramedics swarmed around her, their hands swift and sure as they carefully lifted her onto a stretcher. Obanai's heart pounded in his ears as he watched them secure her, pressing an oxygen mask over her face. The steady beep of a heart monitor began to echo faintly, a sound that should have brought relief but instead only deepened the dread.

Her chest rose and fell faintly, a flicker of life that gave him the smallest sliver of hope. But she wasn't waking up. She wasn't moving.

"No," Obanai rasped, the single word barely audible as tears streaked down his blood-smeared face. He tried again, forcing his trembling body to push through the pain, but it was no use. "Please... Mitsuri..."

His vision blurred further as the paramedics began wheeling her stretcher out, her form disappearing into the blinding lights of the ambulance. Desperation clawed at him, the crushing realization that he couldn't follow, couldn't protect her anymore.

Strong hands gripped him then, lifting him onto another stretcher. His bloodied body sagged against the rough fabric, his head lolling to the side as voices buzzed around him.

"We're losing him! He's bleeding out!"

"Apply pressure—now! We need to get him stabilized!"

The words barely registered. All Obanai could think about was Mitsuri—her voice, her smile, the warmth she always brought into his life. The memory of her shielding him, her defiant tears as she refused to leave him, burned in his mind.

His vision dimmed further, the pain in his stomach intensifying as paramedics worked frantically to stem the bleeding. The world tilted, the flashing lights spinning into a dizzying blur. Yet even as darkness crept in, threatening to pull him under, Obanai's heart clung to one thing.

Her face.

"Mitsuri..." he whispered one last time, his voice breaking, barely audible. A plea. A prayer.

As his eyes finally slid shut, the sound of sirens filled the air, growing louder and louder until they were all-consuming. Then, silence. Darkness.

But even in that darkness, the faint memory of her remained, a flicker of hope he refused to let go.
