Chapter Song: D4vd - "Here With Me"
_____
Sanemi pushed open the door to the room, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips as the morning sunlight streamed in. He paused for a moment, his gaze softening at the sight before him. Kanae sat up in bed, stretching languidly, her yukata slipping slightly to reveal the curve of her shoulder and a cleavage. Her hair was tousled from sleep, and her eyes were still half-lidded with drowsiness."Morning," Sanemi greeted, his voice warm, a rare chuckle escaping him.
Kanae blinked up at him, a soft smile spreading across her lips. "Good morning," she replied, her voice light and melodic.
Sanemi crossed the room and sat beside her on the edge of the futon bed, his movements relaxed but deliberate. His arm wrapped around her back, his hand rest naturally on her hip. The warmth of her body against his was a comfort he didn't often allow himself to indulge in.
"How was your morning?" Kanae asked, tilting her head to look at him.
For a brief second, Sanemi froze. His mind flashed to his earlier conversation with Obanai, the heavy decisions they'd made about the girls' safety and the darker possibilities they'd prepared for. He quickly pushed those thoughts away, forcing a casual tone. "Nothing much. Just went for a walk, cleared my head a bit. Same old stuff."
Kanae studied him for a moment, her sharp intuition almost catching the faint edge in his voice. But she chose not to press, trusting that he'd share when he was ready. Instead, she leaned slightly into him, her fingers grazing his. "That sounds nice. A peaceful start to the day."
Sanemi nodded, the faintest flicker of guilt stirring in his chest. He tightened his arm around her, changing the subject. "You hungry? I can call down and have them bring something up for us."
Kanae's stomach answered for her with a small growl, making her giggle. "I guess that's a yes."
Sanemi smirked and reached for the room phone, ready to call for room service, but before he could dial, Kanae's phone buzzed on the nightstand. She picked it up, glancing at the screen. "It's the apartment manager," she said, her brows knitting slightly.
Sanemi's posture stiffened, his arm lowering as he put back the phone and watched her answer the call.
"Hello?" Kanae said, her voice polite but curious as she put it in speaker.
"Good morning, Miss Kocho," the manager's voice came through, professional and calm. "I'm calling to inform you that there's been a plumbing issue in the unit above yours. We'll need to access your apartment to check for any potential water damage or leaks in the pipes. Would it be all right if we entered your unit later today?"
Kanae's heart sank, her eyes darting to Sanemi. His expression was already hardening, his jaw tightening as he listened. The tension between them was palpable as Kanae responded.
"I... yes, that's fine," she said cautiously. "Please let me know when you're there, and I'd appreciate it if you could call again after the check is complete."
"Of course," the manager replied. "We'll be as quick and unobtrusive as possible. Thank you for your understanding."
As Kanae hung up, silence filled the room. She set her phone down slowly, her hand trembling slightly. "Sanemi..."
"I know," he said, his voice low and grim. "This feels wrong."
"It's just the apartment manager," Kanae said, trying to sound reassuring but failing to mask the uncertainty in her tone. "Maybe it's really a plumbing issue. It has nothing to do with..."
