The train rattled along as Sanemi, Kanae, Mitsuri, and Obanai sat in silence, heading to the police station in Shibuya. Sanemi sat by the window, his fingers tapping restlessly on his phone screen as he scrolled without really reading. Kanae noticed the tension in his shoulders and felt a wave of worry. She glanced at him, reminded of her recent conversation with Genya about their father and wondered if this station was where he worked. After a long 20 minutes, the train finally pulled into the Shibuya stop. They stepped off, blending into the busy streets, and began their walk toward the station.
Just as they reached the sidewalk in front, Sanemi stopped suddenly.
"You guys go ahead. I'll be back in a sec," he muttered, voice tight.
Kanae halted, looking back at him with concern. "Sanemi... are you okay?"
He didn't answer immediately, eyes darting to the ground as if to avoid her gaze. She noticed a flicker of something—maybe frustration or something close to fear—in his expression before he straightened up, nodding quickly.
"Yeah. Just... need some air. I'll be right behind you." His tone was clipped, trying to brush her off.
Obanai, catching the tension, placed a gentle hand on Mitsuri's back to guide her inside. "Let's get this over with."
Reluctantly, Kanae turned to follow the others, giving Sanemi one last look over her shoulder. His gaze met hers, filled with a storm of emotions he seemed too proud or too afraid to speak out loud.
Inside, they approached the front desk, where an officer looked up with a polite but guarded expression. Mitsuri, who looked visibly tense, took a deep breath and spoke up.
"Um... we'd like to report someone," she said, voice trembling slightly.
The officer raised an eyebrow, his gaze sweeping over the group. "Alright. Can you tell me what happened?"
"They're being stalked," Obanai answered firmly. "A man named Doma. There was an incident last night."
The officer nodded slowly, signaling for them to follow. "Alright, let's get you into a waiting room. Someone will be with you shortly."
They exchanged tense glances as they followed him, and soon enough, they found themselves in a quiet waiting room. Mitsuri fidgeted with her hands, clearly anxious, while Obanai reached over, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. Kanae sat beside her, glancing at the door, hoping Sanemi would join them soon.
As they waited in the quiet room, Kanae's gaze kept drifting to the door, watching officers walk by, each one making her heart jump slightly with hope that Sanemi would walk in. But each time, her hope faded. He was nowhere to be seen.
Breaking the silence, Kanae turned to Obanai, who was sitting next to Mitsuri, his arm loosely draped around her shoulders.
"Obanai, may I ask you something?"
He looked over, sensing her seriousness. "What's wrong?"
She hesitated, biting her lip, then leaned in to speak softly. "Have you... have you ever seen Sanemi's father before?"
Obanai's face tightened. He shifted slightly, slouching back in his chair and tucking his hands into the sleeves of his sweater, eyes clouded with memory. "Yeah, I've seen him," he said, his tone subdued. "I'm guessing you're asking because... you know something?"
Kanae swallowed, nervous to reveal what she had learned. Glancing around to make sure no one was nearby, she leaned in closer. "I... I ran into Genya on the train yesterday. He told me what's been going on. Sanemi's father—he's been abusing the entire family. Genya said no matter how many times they've tried reporting it, the officers won't help. They're all afraid of losing their jobs." Her voice dropped lower, filled with concern. "Sanemi's been trying to protect them, but it's wearing him down. I know it's a lot to ask, but... do you think there's any way you could talk to Rengoku's dad? I know he worked here once, and he might be able to do something to help Sanemi and his family."
