Chapter Song: M83 - "Wait"
______
The blaring wail of the ambulance echoed through the city streets, slicing through the cold night air. Inside, the cramped compartment was heavy with tension, the soft hum of machines and the occasional crackle of the paramedic's radio doing little to mask the weight of despair. Kanae lay on the stretcher, her face pale beneath the oxygen mask that obscured her delicate features. Blood stained the bandage hastily wrapped around her head, a vivid reminder of how fragile the moment was. Her breaths came shallow and uneven, the rise and fall of her chest barely perceptible.Sanemi sat beside her, his own injuries forgotten. Blood seeped through the hastily tied bandage on his arm, the crimson soaking into his torn shirt. But he didn't care. His entire focus was on Kanae, on the faint grip of her hand in his. His calloused fingers, trembling despite his best efforts, enveloped hers as if holding on tightly enough would anchor her to this world.
"Don't you dare leave me," he said, his voice raw and breaking. His eyes, usually sharp and filled with defiance, were glossy with unshed tears. "Kanae, please..."
Her eyelids fluttered weakly, and for a brief second, he thought she might open her eyes. But she didn't. Her lips parted slightly, and a faint, almost imperceptible sound escaped, a whisper of his name.
"Sanemi..."
He leaned closer, his heart hammering in his chest. "I'm here," he said quickly, his voice cracking. "I'm right here. Just hang on, okay? We're almost there. You're gonna be fine, you have to be fine."
His gaze dropped to her hand, to the engagement ring that glinted faintly in the dim light. It was streaked with blood—his blood. The sight made his stomach twist. He thumbed over the band gently, as if the act could erase the violence that had brought them here.
"You still haven't told me how you want the wedding to be," he whispered, forcing a shaky laugh. "You said you wanted something small, right? Just us and... and our families. I bet you'd look stunning even if we got married in a goddamn parking lot."
Her fingers twitched faintly in his grasp, a weak but undeniable response. The sight sent a glimmer of hope piercing through his anguish, and he held her hand even tighter.
The paramedic beside them glanced over briefly, his expression grim. "She's stable, but we're not out of the woods yet," he said quietly. The words were meant to reassure, but to Sanemi, they felt like a knife twisting deeper into his chest.
He ignored the paramedic, his focus never leaving Kanae's face. He leaned closer, his forehead nearly touching hers. "Kanae," he murmured, his voice trembling. "You promised me a forever. You... you can't break that promise, okay? You can't."
Her breaths remained shallow, and for a moment, the silence stretched unbearably. Sanemi's shoulders shook, his grip on her hand tightening as he choked back a sob.
"I can't do this without you," he whispered, the confession slipping out before he could stop it. "I don't... I don't know how."
Her hand twitched again, weaker this time, but it was enough. It had to be.
Sanemi pressed his forehead to hers, his tears finally spilling over. "Babe," he begged, his voice barely audible over the hum of the machines. "Just hold on."

Two Hours Later
The fluorescent lights of the hospital buzzed faintly, casting a harsh glow over the waiting room. Kanae had been rushed in for an emergency examination and to stitch the deep wound on her head. The room was a heavy mix of tension and worry, every breath a silent prayer, every minute stretching unbearably.
