The road trip back home felt heavier than the darkness outside as the car's engine was the only sound, humming low and steady. The group was quiet, lost in their thoughts about what awaited them.Obanai drove in silence, his eyes glued to the road, his grip on the wheel so tight his knuckles were white. He kept glancing at the rearview mirror at Mitsuri, as she sat behind him, staring out into the distance, her normally bright expression replaced with something unrecognizable—hollow. For the first time, Obanai couldn't read her mind, and that unsettled him more than anything.
Sanemi sat in the passenger seat. His usual toughness seemed softer, but not out of kindness—it was exhaustion, the weight of his father's death pressing down on him. Unsure how his family reacting to the news of his death. He occasionally glanced at Kanae through the mirror on the sun visor. Kanae sat quietly, her face unreadable. Even Sanemi, sharp-tongued as ever, couldn't bring himself to speak.
The tension in the car was suffocating, as if they were all bracing for an impact that hadn't yet come.
After what felt like an eternity, they finally reached the boys' apartment. After grabbing their duffel bags and souvenirs, the group stepped inside, grateful for the warmth but still dragging the lingering shadows of their thoughts behind them.
That was, until they heard it.
"Mmmh... ahhh..."
Everyone froze.
"...Did you hear that?" Sanemi whispered, eyes darting around.
"Yup," Obanai said flatly as he ignored it and continued to walk to his room.
The sound came again, faint but unmistakable. A low, drawn-out moan. The group exchanged confused looks.
"Wasn't me!" Mitsuri blurted, her hand shooting into the air.
Sanemi's face twisted into something between shock and mischief. "No way..." He stomped over to Kyojuro's door and banged on it. "KYOOOO! YOU FINALLY BUSTIN' MOVES?! ABOUT TIME, MAN!"
The door creaked open, and there stood Kyojuro—wide-eyed, naked, and looking very much like a deer caught in headlights. He stood behind Minako as they were in doggy position. Minako let out an ear-piercing scream.
"AAAAAHHHHHH!"
"GET OUT!" Kyojuro bellowed as he threw his pillow, hit Sanemi on the face.
Sanemi closed the door, blinking rapidly. He turned to the group, utterly shell-shocked. "Did anyone else notice? His sh—"
"Don't," Obanai interrupted.
"—CARPET MATCHES THE DRAPES!" Sanemi finished, ignoring him.
Mitsuri gasped, covering her mouth. Kanae slapped her forehead. Obanai sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "You never know when to stop, do you? I've already known that."
"HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO STOP AFTER SEEING THAT?" Sanemi barked, gesturing wildly at Kyojuro's door.
Before he could say anything else, Kanae stormed over and slapped him so hard the sound echoed.
"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT FOR?!" Sanemi yelled, rubbing his cheek.
"For interrupting them and looking at another woman's BODY!," Kanae snapped.
Meanwhile, Obanai and Mitsuri calmly walked to his room, muttering under his breath. "This place gets dumber by the day."
Sanemi glared at him. "I HEARD THAT!"
"Good," Obanai shot back, slamming his door.
Mitsuri stepped further into the room, she felt an overwhelming sense of peace wash over her. Everything was just as she remembered it—each piece of furniture still in its place. Yet, something was different. The faint scent of cigarettes, once grounding in its familiarity, was gone. In its absence, a warm sense of renewal filled the air.
