Chapter Song: Sara Bareilles - "Gravity"
Later that day, Mitsuri lay motionless in her bed, her blankets pulled tightly around her, shielding her from the world. The gray morning skies matched the heaviness of her heart, as her dark, cold room felt suffocating. Her chest ached, and her pillow was soaked from the endless stream of tears she had cried throughout the night. The aftermath of her breakup with Obanai left her hollow, shattered in ways she couldn't find words to express. The man she had dreamed of, the love she thought was unbreakable, was gone, and all she could do was blame herself. She wondered if it would have been better if they had never met, if she had just gone home. Maybe then life wouldn't feel like this—so broken. Her quiet sobs echoed through the empty room.
Outside, the sound of soft footsteps approached, and the door slid open slightly. Shinobu's gentle voice broke the silence, laced with concern. "Mitsuri? We're coming in."
Shinobu and Kanae entered cautiously, their eyes immediately falling on Mitsuri's still form beneath the covers. The vibrant, joyful energy she once radiated was gone, replaced by a silence that weighed on them like a shadow. They exchanged a glance, worry etched in their expressions. Shinobu knelt beside the bed, her voice soft and tender. "Mitsuri, we're worried about you. We brought your favorite breakfast—pancakes with honey."
No response came, just the faint sound of Mitsuri's breathing under the covers. Shinobu sighed, her sadness deepening as she gently placed the tray on the bedside table. "It's still warm," she added, trying to spark some sign of life in Mitsuri. "You need to eat something."
Kanae sat beside her on the bed, her fingers lightly brushing the blanket. "We're here for you, whenever you're ready to talk, okay?" she whispered, her voice barely audible. But still, Mitsuri didn't move. She lay there, lost in the depths of her heartbreak, the weight of it too much to bear.
Shinobu gave Kanae a helpless glance. "We'll leave the food here, alright?" she murmured. "Take your time." The two sisters stood, casting one last worried glance at Mitsuri before quietly leaving the room, their hearts heavy with concern.
In the living room, Kanae sat on the couch, staring blankly at the television. The afternoon light was muted, hidden behind clouds, and nothing seemed to ease the ache in her chest. She had never seen Mitsuri like this—so devastated, so lost.
Sanemi appeared from Kanae's room, half-awake, his hands shoved into his sweatpants pockets, his face unreadable. He hesitated before stepping closer, his usual confidence dulled. "Hey," he grunted, breaking the tense silence. "What's going on?"
Kanae looked up at him, her gaze soft but weary. She saw past his rough exterior to the concern he tried to hide. "It's Mitsuri," she said quietly. "She's... broken. She came home this morning, ran straight to her room, and hasn't spoken since." Her voice faltered. "I thought she was fine when she went over to your place last night to talked to him, and then she didn't come back until this morning..."
Sanemi frowned slightly, his unease showing. "Obanai works at night. He usually gets home around 2am."
Kanae's brows furrowed, worry tightening in her chest. "Then... where did she go during that time?"
Sanemi sat beside her, unsure of what to say. He didn't want to meddle in Mitsuri and Obanai's relationship, not when he couldn't even handle his own with Kanae. But something about Mitsuri's silence gnawed at him. "She'll bounce back," he muttered, though it felt hollow in his mouth. "She just needs space."
Kanae shook her head, her eyes filled with doubt. "I don't know, Sanemi. She's never been like this. Not even with her ex."
He stayed silent, unsure, a knot of guilt twisting inside him. He wanted to walk away, to distance himself from the mess. But something about Kanae's quiet worry kept him rooted in place. "She'll be fine," he repeated, this time as if trying to convince himself.
The house felt heavy with unspoken concern. Shinobu wandered into the kitchen, leaning against the counter, her face tight with worry. Kanae and Sanemi sat in tense silence in the living room, their eyes constantly flicking toward the hallway, waiting for any sign of Mitsuri emerging from her room. Then, without warning, the door creaked open.
Shinobu's head snapped up, and she rushed toward the hallway, Kanae close behind. Mitsuri stumbled out, her eyes swollen and red, her body trembling as though it were about to give out. Her usual light was gone, leaving only a pale, fragile version of herself. Each step seemed like an enormous effort.
"Mitsuri!" Shinobu called, rushing to her. But before she could reach her, Mitsuri collapsed to her knees, her sobs ripping through the silence with a force that shattered the air. She curled into herself, her body trembling uncontrollably as she clutched her chest, trying to hold herself together.
"It hurts so much..." Mitsuri cried, her voice raw and broken. "I loved him... I really loved him... Why wasn't I enough?" Her words barely made it through the sobs, but the pain in them was undeniable.
Shinobu knelt beside her, pulling her into a tight embrace. "I'm here," she whispered, her own voice cracking. "I'm here, Mitsuri. Let it out."
Kanae stood nearby, tears streaming down her face as she watched her friend crumble. She pressed a hand to her mouth, the weight of Mitsuri's pain crashing over her like a wave. She couldn't move, couldn't speak—she could only watch as Mitsuri fell apart.
In the living room, Sanemi sat frozen, Mitsuri's sobs echoing through the house, piercing through him. He clenched his jaw, frustration building inside him. "What the hell did Obanai do?" he muttered, more to himself than anyone else.
His instinct was to storm out, to find Obanai and demand answers. But he stayed rooted in place, unable to move as the suffocating weight of Mitsuri's heartbreak filled the air. It was a pain he couldn't shake.
After what felt like an eternity, as Mitsuri's sobs began to quiet, Sanemi finally rose and walked toward the door. He pulled out his phone and called Obanai. After a few rings, it went to voicemail. He clenched his teeth, his frustration flaring. Without a word, he threw on his jacket, ready to confront Obanai in person.
"Sanemi," Kanae's soft voice stopped him. She tugged at his sleeve. "Where are you going?"
"To knock some sense into him."
Kanae's eyes were filled with worry as she shook her head. "No, Sanemi. This is something they need to figure out on their own. We can't fix this for them."
Sanemi paused, his fists tightening in frustration. For once, he wanted to help, to fix it. But Kanae was right. This wasn't a fight he could win for them. He sighed. "Fine. I'll see you later."
"Okay... be safe," she whispered, her heart heavy as she watched him leave.
