Chapter Song: Jeff Bernat - "Still"
________
They arrived at the coffee shop. It had been so long since they'd last stepped inside, but everything was just as they remembered. The atmosphere was still cozy and warm, with the familiar leather booths and soft, plush couches near the windows. The soft hum of conversation blended with the gentle clink of mugs and glasses, setting the tone for a quiet, private conversation. They chose to sit at the far back of the shop, just like they used to, on the comfortable couches facing each other. The low, comfortable light cast soft shadows around them as they sank into the cushions, the silence between them thick but not uncomfortable. It felt like the world had paused, waiting for them to speak, to fill the space with the words they'd longed to say to each other.
A young waiter appeared with a smile, his notepad ready. He asked what they'd like to order, and Mitsuri blinked for a moment, still trying to settle back into the rhythm of their shared time. "I'll have a Coke, with ice, please," she said softly, her voice a little shaky. She noticed the way her hands trembled slightly, betraying the nerves she was trying to hide.
Obanai, still taking in the way everything felt so familiar, simply nodded. "Just water for me."
The waiter nodded and walked off to place their order, leaving the two of them in quiet contemplation.
Mitsuri fidgeted with the edge of her napkin, the silence stretching between them. It had been so long since they had been in each other's presence like this—truly together, with no walls between them. The last time they'd shared a moment like this, it had been filled with the promise of something lasting. Now, it felt like that promise had been stretched thin, almost broken, but somehow still intact. She glanced up at Obanai, her heart skipping a beat at the sight of him. He looked... different, yet the same. So beautiful, yet so handsome.
"You look... different," she said, her voice soft and tentative, a blush creeping up her cheeks. "Your hair's so much longer now... how long is it?"
Obanai chuckled, and Mitsuri couldn't help but smile at the sound. His eyes softened, though, as he noticed her nervousness, the way she kept looking down and away, as if avoiding the intensity of the moment. "It's gotten pretty long," he teased, but there was an undeniable warmth in his voice. "It reaches all the way down to my lower back now."
Mitsuri's eyes widened as she processed his words, the thought of his hair that long sending a rush of heat to her cheeks. She tried to imagine it, but her mind was spinning, lost in the idea of how it would look cascading down his back and over his chest. "I—I can't even picture it," she admitted, her voice a little breathless.
Obanai noticed her flustered state and decided to tease her just a little more. "Don't worry," he said, his voice deep with affection. "You'll see it tonight."
Mitsuri's heart skipped a beat at his words. She could only cover her face with her hands, her blush deepening as she tried to hide her reaction from him. Obanai smiled at her, taking in the sight of her soft, embarrassed expression. He reached out gently, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, and she looked up at him, her eyes full of both sadness and longing.
But then, his gaze shifted. He noticed something that made his heart tighten in his chest. Mitsuri's dress, light and airy, fluttered with the movement of her hands, but there was something more—something he couldn't ignore. There, peeking out from the fabric of her dress, was the faint, healed outline of her scar. It was small, but it was unmistakable, a reminder of the pain she'd endured while they were apart.
His face paled slightly, and his eyes darted away as he tried to suppress the shock. Mitsuri noticed immediately, her own face falling as she realized what he was seeing. She instinctively moved to cover it, but the damage was already done. The air between them grew heavier, more charged with the unspoken emotions they both carried.
