"Hey, Hen," Buck says as he reaches the couches of the fire station, looking around to make sure it's just them.

"Hey, Buckaroo, what's up?" Hen questions.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Always," Hen responds, putting all of her attention on Buck, now.

"Well, I know that we haven't really talked much about Tommy, but I just need to know something, since you worked with him."

"Okay, what is it?" Hen questions.

"What do you know about his dad?" Buck asks.

"Not much, really. Tommy and I weren't that close. We weren't like how you and I are. We were more coworkers than family. Why?"

"He's in town," Buck responds as he sits in defeat.

"Wait, really? I always thought he was dead," Hen can't hide the shock in her voice.

Before Buck can respond, Chimney walks up the stairs, "hey, guys. What are we talking about with such serious looks."

"Chim!" Buck quickly stands, "you and Tommy are close, yeah?"

"Yeah?" Chimney questions, glancing towards Hen briefly.

"Do you know anything about his dad?" Buck asks.

Chimney tenses before walking away, "Uh, where's cap? He's usually in the kitchen at the start of shift."

"Wha-don't change the topic!" Buck exclaims as he follows after his brother-in-law.

"Buck, it's not my place," Chimney responds.

"Chim, come on, how bad is he? I mean, you and I both understand-."

"No, not like his father," Chimney interrupts

"His dad was worse than yours?" Hen speaks up.

"Tommy wished his dad was like mine or yours, Hen," Chimney says softly before he walks away, this time not being followed.

"I guess that explains why he's freaking out so much," buck says, more to himself.

"Kinard, where is your head at?" Higgs, his coworker, questions as they do inventory.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, you've recounted the syringes three times now and haven't written a number down or done anything on the count sheet," Higgs says.

"I'm fine, just tired."

"I've seen you after double shifts and you're not this spacey," Higgs replies.

Tommy sighs and turns to face Higgs, "he's in town," is all he says before he begins counting gauze pads.

"Oh."

"Buck, your phone's blowing up," Chimney shouts from the couch.

Buck stands and jogs over to where his phone is and unplugs it from the charger, looking at it, "oh, I go- I have to go. Tell Bobby I have a family crisis."

Buck runs and Chimney quickly stands, "Wh- Buck!"

"It's not Maddie, I'm fine!" Buck shouts before he runs faster towards his car.

He gets in and quickly fastens his seatbelt before he peels out of the parking lot, getting onto the road with ease. He gets to his destination relatively quickly, thankful the traffic wasn't any worse than usual. He parks his vehicle but doesn't bother turning off the engine as he whips his seatbelt off and jumps from the car. He runs into the building and runs to the front desk area.

"Hey, I-"

"Buckley!" Buck shouts to see Higgs coming out of the locker room, flagging him over.

Buck jogs over, "hey, what the hell's going on?"

"At first, he was just spacey and distracted off calls. Then he was distracted on a call and almost deployed the fire suppression too late," Higgs explains.

"Where is he?" Buck asks.

"He's in the locker room. I kept everyone else out because... Well, you'll see."

Buck nods and walks past him, weaving his way through the locker room. He turns a corner and sees Tommy sitting against the wall. His legs are bent and his arms are resting on his knees. His knuckles are red and Buck knows bruises will soon form. He moves to sit in front of Tommy and gently places his hand on his boyfriend's arm.

"Hey," Buck says, his voice barely above a whisper.

"So, I take it Higgs called you?"

"Well, he texted, but yeah. He was worried about you. I'm worried about you," Buck replies.

"I'm so-."

"No, don't apologize for having emotions. You're human. Just let me help you," Buck says as he moves his hand to cup Tommy's cheek, "how about we go to my place and watch some movies?"

Tommy just nods and accepts Buck's help up, leaning against him tiredly as they leave. Higgs had managed to get everyone in the back so that nobody is seeing Tommy in his current state.

Buck gets Tommy in his car and leaves the parking lot, making his way to the loft as music plays on a low volume over the radio.

A/N: Okay, so hope you enjoyed!!! Also, the reasoning for the title:

Family doesn't end in blood. It ends in ILY as in "I love you". That is what family is. It's love, not blood.
