Tommy smiles as he climbs out of the truck and walks around to Buck's side, helping him out of the vehicle. Once all four feet are on solid ground, they join their hands. Tommy takes a deep breath before guiding Buck over to the pavilion.
"There's a lot of people here," Buck says nervously, "are they all your family?"
"Some are friends," Tommy responds just as they step off the grass onto the concrete of the pavilion.
"Thomas," an older woman says as she approaches, hugging Tommy tightly and kissing either cheek.
"Hey, mom," Tommy says with a smile that Buck can see is fake, "this is Buck."
"Buck? What kind of name is that?"
"My last name is Buckley, so people just call me Buck at work and it stuck," Buck responds.
"Oh," Tommy's mother nods, eyeing Buck up and down, "I'm Martha Kinard, Thomas' mother."
Before anything else can be said, Martha runs off to greet someone else. With a chuckle, Buck turns to Tommy, "she not like nicknames?"
"Not one bit," Tommy responds.
"We should introduce her to my mom," Buck says with a chuckle.
"Yeah, that will go over great," Tommy responds as he pulls out a chair for Buck before sitting next to him.

"So, Thomas," Buck looks up from his conversation with a little kid to see Tommy standing in front of an older man.
"Dad," Tommy responds.
"How is your life of leisure, fighting fires from the air?"
"Well, actually," Tommy says, "I flew into a hurricane to rescue a capsized cruise ship."
"He got a medal of valor for that," Buck adds as he stands up next to Tommy, "hello, sir, I'm Evan Buckley."
"Please, in my day, we got medals for actual fires," his father responds.
"Ev, this is my father, retired firefighter Joseph Kinard," Tommy says.
"It's nice to meet you," Buck says.
Joseph turns to his son, "who is this?"
"This," Tommy places his arm around Buck's waist, "is my boyfriend. He's a firefighter out of the 118, where I used to work."
"That candy ass captain still work there?"
"Good talk, dad," Tommy quickly pulls Buck away from his dad, "let's go down to the beach."

"Your parents seem... strict," Buck says as he and Tommy sit on the beach.
"Yeah, you should have seen them when I came out," Tommy says with a soft chuckle.
"Was it bad?"
"Well," Tommy says as he picks up his shirt and points to a scar on the back of his shoulder blade, "this isn't actually from a call."
"Your parents did that?"
"Yeah," Tommy replies, "he pushed me down and I fell into a glass table."
"Woah," Buck says softly, "I'm sorry."
Tommy shrugs, "I've moved past it. They've made a lot of progress."
"Well, thank you for showing me this side to you," Buck says, "I really enjoy learning more about you."
"Well, I hope you have plenty of time to learn more," Tommy says before gently kissing Buck.
