Buck sits on the padded table, the paper crinkling underneath him as he moves. His right wrist is in a splint while he holds it against his abdomen as if holding his ribs in place. Based on the pain he feels with each breath, he might as well be. His attention moves to the door as a woman walks in wearing a lab coat.

"Okay, so the tests came back negative," she says as she looks at her clip board, "the police have all of the evidence, including your clothes."

"Yeah," Buck says awkwardly as he glances down to the gown on his body.

"You have three bruised ribs, a sprained wrist, and a mild concussion. You will be unable to drive for at least a week until you get cleared. Have you called anyone to come and pick you up?"

"No, not yet. I don't really know who to call," Buck says.

"Who are you thinking?"

"Honestly? I think my best bet would be my friend, Eddie. Best friend, actually. He'll know I'm lying but won't push me to tell the truth," Buck responds.

"Okay, if you could write his name and number down, we'll contact him for you, since your phone is evidence," the doctor says while handing over a pad and pen.

"Yeah, just make sure he knows that I'm okay, I just can't drive," Buck says as he hands the pad back after writing the number.

The doctor nods and leaves the room. Just moments later, a nurse walks in with some spare scrubs for Buck to change out of the hospital gown into. Buck smiles thankfully and begins to change once the nurse leaves. He takes a little longer because the splint and his rib injuries cause problems. Once he is dressed, though, he finds a handheld mirror on the counter. Having not seen himself since the assault, Buck is quick to grab it.

The man staring back at him is a stranger. He has a large stitched up gash on his forehead, an inch above his eye. The rest of his face is swollen with bruises forming. He couldn't pick out his birth mark if this wasn't his own face. His lip is swollen with a gash through it. He sighs as he puts the mirror down, the door opening afterwards.

"Mr. Buckley, your ride is here," he turns to see a nurse standing there with a wheelchair.

"That's really no-."

"It's hospital policy, which you know," the nurse says.

"Hey, I'm Eddie Diaz. I was called to pick up my friend, Evan Buckley," Eddie rushes out as he reaches the reception desk.

Moments later, a doctor walks out, "hi, I'm Evan's doctor. A nurse will bring him down momentarily. I just wanted to make sure you understand that he shouldn't be left alone. His injuries impair his mobility and he may need some assistance."

"Yeah, I understand. My son is at summer camp, so Buck can stay with me. I live in a one story house, so that should help. I know stairs can suck with injured ribs and a concussion. What did you say happened, again?"

"I didn't say, actually. I wasn't cleared to give that information out," the doctor says before the doors open and a nurse pushes a wheelchair forward.

"Holy shit," Eddie says quietly as he covers his mouth with his hand.

"Okay, I know it looks bad, bu-."

"Buck, what the hell happened to you?" Eddie says as he takes the wheelchair and pushes him from the building after thanking the medical staff.

"I was mugged," Buck says simply.

"No, you weren't," Eddie responds as they reach his truck just outside the hospital.

Eddie puts the brakes on the chair and opens the passenger door. He turns to Buck and helps him stand, "nice scrubs, by the way. Didn't know you went to medical school."

Buck chuckles, "yeah, thanks."

"Hey, Eds?" Buck says from his spot on the couch the next day.

"Yeah?" Eddie asks from the kitchen.

"You have PTSD, right?"

Eddie walks back into the living room with a look of confusion. He sits on the coffee table, his arms against his knees, "yeah, why?"

"How do you-Like, how do you deal with it?"

"Well, I didn't for a long time, you know? I used to shove it all down. Frank helps, now, though. So do my friends, like you."

"Me? How do I help?"

"I mean, even if I don't open up to you about the military much, but I know I can," Eddie says softly.

"Right, yeah," Buck says.

"Hey, that works both ways," Eddie says.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, Evan, that you can always talk to me, about anything."

"Right," Buck says as he adjusts his position.

Eddie just watches him do so, realizing he may want to open up.

"I w-w-w-wasn't m-mugged. I-I lied," Buck says, his eyes on his lap.

"Okay," Eddie says in a way that urges Buck to continue.

"I was," Buck pauses before taking a deep breath, "I was raped."

"Oh," Eddie says, "do you kn-."

"No, I don't know who it was but they performed a rape kit, so the police have the evidence," Buck says, rubbing his uninjured hand against his leg.

"Buck, is it alright if I touch your hand?"

When Buck nods, Eddie gently places his hand on Buck's, rubbing his thumb against his best friend's skin. They sit like this for a while before Buck starts to get tired, his concussion affecting his energy.

"Here, let's get you to bed," Eddie says as he helps Buck stand up.

Eddie leads him to his bedroom despite Buck's protests. He pulls the blanket and sheet back. Buck carefully gets in the bed and thanks Eddie as he pulls the covers back up.

Eddie turns to leave but Buck grabs his wrist with his uninjured hand, "c-can y-you stay?"

"Yeah, of course."

"Thanks. I just.. I don't really want to be alone," Buck says softly.

Eddie watches as Buck relaxes against the bed and falls asleep, his chest rising and falling evenly. Eddie focuses on Buck's bruises, but he sees past them. He sees the way Buck smiled when they took Chris skateboarding. He sees the hair that he finally let be curly and stopped straightening. He sees the birthmark that everyone mistakes for a scar. He sees the stubble. Eddie relaxes his body against the bed. He feels the bed move and turns to see Buck stirring.

"Hey, Buck, you're okay. You're okay," Eddie says softly, careful to not touch and trigger Buck.

Buck relaxes but moves to lay his head on Eddie's shoulder, his splinted wrist resting against the veteran's torso. Eddie looks at him in shock before he smiles, loosely wrapping his arm around Buck, allowing him to move away if needed.

"I've got you, Buck. I'm here."
