____Obanai pulled up to the curb, the soft glow of the car's headlights slicing through the misty night. The air was cool, and he could see Mitsuri standing outside the bakery, her new coat keeping her warm and her pink hair gently tousled by the breeze. She smiled when she saw him, her face lighting up like it always did. Normally, that warmth would calm him—ground him—but tonight, something cold lingered in the back of his mind.
The thought of Misaki and her cruel words still echoing in his head. Her threats, the venom in her voice as she plotted to destroy everything he had with Mitsuri. He had to protect her. He couldn't let Misaki get close, but he didn't know how to shield Mitsuri from the storm that was coming.
He forced a smile as she climbed into the car, her cheerful energy filling the space. "Hey! Thank you again for picking me up. I'm so hungry, where did you want to eat" she said with a grin, her voice light as she leaned over to kiss his cheek.
Obanai nodded, trying to keep his tone normal. "Yeah, I found a sushi place that stays open late. Thought we could go there."
"Perfect! It's been so long since I had sushi. It'll be my treat since you're always paying for me" Mitsuri beamed, settling into the seat. She took out her phone and quickly closed her explore app, shielding him away from seeing his secret gift she purchased for him for his late birthday.
"No, save your money. You're going to need it when you move". He said with a cold tone as the car started moving. The words came out sharper than he meant, and the smile fell from Mitsuri's face
The drive was quieter than usual. Mitsuri glanced at him, trying to start small conversations, but Obanai's responses were short, almost absent. Normally, he'd tease her or ask about her day, but tonight, he was distant, his fingers gripping the steering wheel a little too tightly.
They arrived at the sushi restaurant, a small, cozy place tucked away in the corner of town. The two of them were seated in a booth by the window, where they could see the soft drizzle of rain beginning to fall outside. Mitsuri smiled at him across the table, but he could see a hint of worry behind her eyes. She noticed the change in him—how could she not? He wasn't laughing with her, wasn't as engaged as he usually was.
As they ordered and the food arrived, Mitsuri tried to fill the silence with stories from work, her bubbly personality a stark contrast to the weight Obanai carried on his shoulders.
"So, one of my coworkers was telling me about this art exhibit happening next month, and I thought it would be fun if we—" she stopped mid-sentence when she saw Obanai wasn't really listening. His eyes were focused on his plate, barely touching his food.
The tension between them was palpable. Normally, they'd laugh through dinner, but tonight, Obanai barely spoke. Every time she called his name, his responses were brief, his thoughts elsewhere. Mitsuri's attempts to connect fell flat. Her chest tightened with unease as she struggled to keep up the conversation, but nothing worked. His silence was suffocating.
"Obanai?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern. "Is everything okay?"
He looked up, forcing a smile. "Yeah, I'm just tired. Long day."
Mitsuri nodded, but she wasn't convinced. The air between them was thick with unspoken words, and it was starting to eat at her. Her mind raced, filling with doubts. Was he falling out of interest with her? Was she not enough for him anymore? Why wasn't he talking to her like he used to? Her negative thoughts creeped in unaware of her trauma from his ex .
