Stevie was in and out of sleep as she fought the fever she had, feeling overheated and weak as contractions caused her even more discomfort.
Curling just slightly to her side, she moaned softly in her sleep with a scrunched expression to her face.
Lindsey reached over and simply swiped her hair back, watching as the monitor displayed the contraction.
Letting off a huff once it was over, she tried to open her eyes once more and she acknowledged him briefly.
"My water broke," she mumbled.
"What?" he stood up.
"You have to get the doctor," she sighed, eyes still shut.
She was under the blanket, so he couldn't exactly see anything and since she was so feverish, he had a feeling she was dreaming or even hallucinating, but he also took into consideration she had three kids and had to know and or feel it. He even acknowledged how intuitive she was and he thought maybe she knew it was going to happen.
Just then a nurse walked in to check on her.
"Hey, she just said her water broke, but I don't really know if she's dreaming it or not," he mumbled, clearly unsure of how to go about things.
"Let me check," she walked over to put on a pair of gloves and she lifted up the blanket, revealing the amniotic fluid that seeped through just her hospital gown so far.
Lindsey was a little hesitant to look only because he was very anxious over everything as it was.
"It sure did," she said very calmly about the matter.
His heartbeat picked up in an instant.
"Let me grab another nurse," she mentioned as she discarded her gloves. Looking at the man, she kind of smiled. "Everything's fine, don't worry. We just have to clean her up and let her doctor know, okay?" she simply stated, acknowledging the fact that he was anxious about everything happening. "I'm just following procedure as directed is all."
He nodded.
As soon as she walked out, it was as though Dr. Arthur walked in like he knew intuitively or something.
"How are you doing, Lindsey?" he patted his arm firmly.
"I've been better," he let off a dry chuckle.
"You can relax," he assured. "I was just told she's getting ready to deliver..." he glanced over at her state, knowing it was going to be tough.
"Is she gonna be able to?" he wondered. "She's still sick."
"It's doable," he nodded. "She's gonna be a little too weak to push, but everything will be fine. I'm betting once the baby is out, her fever will go away. It's the anemia and pregnancy fighting each other which is what's causing the fever. It's straining, which is making labor more uncomfortable."
All day, things had been so touch and go, off and on between one doctor from the other to her doctor, Dr. Arthur finally arriving, and still it had been a waiting game. Until that very moment.
The doctor led the guitarist out of the room while the nurses changed Stevie's gown and moved her to another bed so she could be taken to the delivery room.
"We're gonna keep things moving, okay? It's gonna be okay. The anesthesiologist is going to dose her with an epidural and things will go as any normal delivery. She's just out of it, so she'll need assistance."
He semi nodded, even unsure of how that could be helped.
"She's done this before so it shouldn't be that bad and I've delivered all her children... Things were rough with her youngest, but at the end of the day, she got through it and both were perfectly healthy."
