"Do you remember in the seventies when there was that two day party and I didn't take my contacts out, because well, we were all drunk or high and partying? Remember, they had to remove them and after the fact, I couldn't see?" Stevie wondered.
It was something that popped into her mind every once in a while and made her laugh when she looked back on all the crazy shit they got themselves into, although at that moment, it wasn't as funny.
"Yes, I remember..."
"How could you forget? All you guys did was set booby traps around the studio for me to fall into..." she rolled her eyes. "Anyways, this is nothing like that. Back then I wasn't exactly blind, everything was so blurry that I felt blind. But this is so different," she sighed. "Everything is black. It's like standing in a dark room with your eyes wide open, trying to see and when you can't, you turn a light on... There's no light."
"It's gonna get better, okay?" his tone was reassuring, but as he figured; she was getting frustrated.
The door opened.
Lindsey looked over to see her kids coming in.
"Who's there?" her head turned at the sound of the door.
The two sets of footsteps were very familiar and prominent.
"Hi, babies..." she said a moment after.
Nicholas creased his brow.
"How'd you know it was us?" Shannon crossed her arms, trying hard to understand how her mother would know it was both of them when she couldn't see.
Lindsey was amazed, but he too was dying to know how she could figure it out so easily.
"Let me just say, being a mom helps... How many times you guys would come running while my back was turned, while you come through the door and I had my head in a book... Shannon, you're always wearing your combat boots and they're heavy. I can hear how your weight shifts because you try to tread lightly and the laces hit the metal grommets."
She smirked.
"And Nick, you're heavy footed. It always sounds like you're stomping, you don't pick up your feet at times and your Chucks squeak... Right now you're anxious so you're forgetting to walk like normal when you're out in public and you're shuffling."
He wasn't surprised she'd know all those things but he would have never thought about even the smaller details.
"And Lindsey, when you came earlier, I just knew... You walk perfectly, heel-toe, you've always been light-footed and when you shift your weight to one side, the leather of your shoe makes the tiniest sound, but I could also hear your jeans."
He leaned in and pressed a kiss to her head in response.
She lifted her brow, "Jeffrey used to walk lightly too, unless he was wearing shoes. That was the only time he made noise and it would come off as a stomp like your dad... I could always feel his presence because he always tried hard to scare me when my back was turned..." she recounted, feeling a heavy heart right in the moment.
The writer and poet that she was, it was apparent at how observant she was to details; everything meant something to her.
"I don't know how you do it..." Lindsey shook his head, rubbing her shoulder.
She shrugged, "I'm genuinely surprised I haven't gone into flight mode from panic. All of my knowledge is serving me and I'm grateful... Clearly this is a lesson..." she then extended both her hands. "Kids, come here..."
Shannon went to the left while Nicholas went to the right, each of them taking a hand in order to acknowledge her as they sat on either edge of the bed.
