Ep. 14 "Day One" Ch. 2/4

Cardio? Hate it.

So much that Joy had since shed a layer, her stolen 10K jacket now tied over her waist and the sleeves of her shirt rolled over her elbows.

If Joy was warm, the world was definitely ending. Oh, wait... it already did.

"Do you have any idea where we are?" Probably hell, but Murphy hadn't liked that answer the last four times Joy had suggested it, starting four arguments that ended with Joy being carried like a sack of potatoes to prevent violence and Warren using duct tape to keep Murphy from speaking and aggravating her further.

"Somewhere in sunny Southern California."

"Seriously. How much further? I don't feel so good." If Joy didn't share his exact sentiment, she would've said something like 'too bad' to Murphy.

However, currently, Joy wanted to curl up into a ball, chop her feet off, and let the vultures pick her eyes out as long as she didn't have to walk another mile of endless desert.

There weren't even any Zs to entertain her, what else was Joy supposed to do that wasn't wallow in self-pity?

"Well, we could take a break. I'm curious myself." No one needed to be told twice before they all flopped over pieces of rubble, fanning each other while Addy checked their current location. All but 10K, of course.

Joy was staring to believe she was dating a cyborg, but she wouldn't complain as long as she could use his leg and shadow to rest against.

"It can't be." Addy muttered under her breath, nearly dropping in shock her salvaged tablet from a couple of miles back.

"So, where the hell are we?"

"Disneyland." Joy looked around lazily, all she saw was rubble, dust, sand, and scraps of what once laid there, but if she squinted her eyes hard enough the pile of rubble in the distance could have been Cinderella's castle.

Huh, who would've guessed that she'd end up in Disneyland six years after she had last been—four of those in an apocalypse.

"What?" The happiest land on earth now reduced to nothing but a wasteland.

That alone summarized the apocalypse so far.

"Hard to tell for sure, but I think 'It's a Small World' would have been right over there." Joy squinted her eyes in the direction Addy pointed at, finding a couple of broken tires and tracks.

Even without a building, Joy could still picture herself with a pink Mickey balloon held in her arms, watching the little animatronics sing in their high-pitched voices about kindness and world peace or whatever.
