Ep. 1 "No Mercy (Part One)" Ch. 7/7

They lasted on guard for about a mile... or two... or however long the stretch of hills past ten minutes was. After that, Red and Joy both suggested a break.

Turns out, Joy wasn't the only one who needed a break every few minutes before she started to complain. Similarly to how 10K wasn't the only one who liked shooting.

While they regained their breath, 10K had the brilliant idea to hack off a Z's arm and use that as target practice with his gears. However, 5K, who had practically melded with 10K's shadow, had followed him through the entire ordeal. Which ended with 5K acquiring some free gear shooting lessons, and he was pretty much a natural at it.

Just two minutes with a slingshot and 5K had already cut one of the hand's fingers off. Joy hadn't managed that in near a decade of trying.

"He's good with kids," Joy scowled automatically at the sound of Red's voice, and even more so with how she kept eyeing 10K and 5K together.

If Red thought she could crouch there like a bright red trash bag and steal Joy's boyfriend from right under her nose, she was in for a surprise.

Sorry, chica, but 10K isn't available.

Seeing as Joy didn't respond to her initial trail of thoughts, but she still wanted to extend some kind of conversation towards her—who knew why—Red pivoted to a different topic of conversation altogether.

She nodded at the gun hanging from Joy's hip. "Do you shoot?"

"Nope."

"Why carry a gun, then?" Joy was kind of missing the '10K looked adorable with children' conversation, somehow that was less awkward.

Or it was less awkward because Joy didn't have to give an actual answer, and she could just glare at Red while licking the scab over her lip.

Joy shrugged, ripping blades of grass out of the ground and tossing them in Red's direction—she didn't notice. "It makes me look cooler."

"How do you kill zombies then?" Now that's a topic Joy could get behind.

Who didn't love talking about how they killed Zs?

Joy took out her hatchet, the shine of the sun reflected off its edge catching Red's eye who angled her body further in her direction rather than carefully watching the horizon.

She'd never dare say anything, but Joy thought that when Red did that, she looked like some kind of bird on a wire surveying its surroundings. So, maybe she was related to 5K after all.

Joy swung her hatchet in a slow arc, ending directly in front of Red's neck, her breath fogging up the freshly sharpened edge. Although her action was innocent enough, Joy did mean it as a threat, but Red didn't even flinch.
