Murphy, sadly, wasn't shot, but at least Joy got a tour of the facilities as Escorpion declared them temporary prisoners.
In reality, he didn't call them that—he said guests—but Joy thought temporary prisoners fit better.
Especially since guests weren't normally led through tunnels that smelled like they'd dunked their heads in the sewage.
"What is that smell?" Joy first instinct went to smell herself, just in case—it was the apocalypse after all, showers and teenagehood didn't exactly mix well.
However, for once, the smell didn't come from her, but from all around her.
"The future." Escorpion answered eagerly, like the stench was something to be proud of—it wasn't. Not even parents with a genius baby held up their dirty diapers to be proud of.
"More like caca." 10K jabbed his elbow into her side, Joy half-glaring at him from the corner of her eye. "That doesn't count."
She only said poop, that wasn't a swear. Now, if Joy had said mier—
"We've found out a way to pay for the new world. We no longer have enemies. We have resources." Escorpion stopped in front of a container, banging twice on the hollow shell only for the sound to echo back with other too familiar noises.
Humans may be a dwindling species, but Joy couldn't deny they were quite resourceful. This was the second civilization in the apocalypse she'd seen take advantage of Zs to better the place.
Was it a potential risk? Definitely. But it was just like a zoo; you never knew when the monkeys would become smarter than humans and enslave them, but people still crowded around to watch them pick their asses.
"So you just leave your resources down here to rot?"
"We let them compost. Composting creates heat. Heat creates energy." Doc hummed, almost impressed. He would've loved Burrtown if that was the case.
"Zombies for fuel. Clever." His ego being stroked added a new rushed pace to Escorpion's steps as they moved faster through the tunnels.
Curse Joy's tiny legs, even if she wasn't that much shorter than Escorpion. Maybe she just needed to do more exercise.
Who was Joy kidding? She wouldn't exercise even in death. Once a couch potato, always a couch potato.
After too many winding passages, all with the same rotting zombie stink to them, Escorpion finally led them to the end of the road—a large industrial door that he pushed open without hesitation.
The bright sunlight blinded all of them with white spots, but that wasn't a shock after hours of being stuck underground like sewer rats. What startled Joy was the noise that came through the window.
