Ep. 2 "No Mercy (Part Two)" Ch. 5/6

•——— ——— —•——

Joy felt dizzy.

Dizzy with worry, exhaustion, hunger, and clawing claustrophobia after being locked inside a building, and someone had spun her about six times so that didn't help her case.

When it all went to shit, Joy wanted to stay outside—mainly to find 10K, but also to stay away from the boarded and painted windows and doors that turned the building into one massive red coffin.

Alas, Red had latched onto her wrist and dragged her inside, shoving both of them into the nearest office cubicle that she could, those around them with weapons ready and baited breaths.

Joy would've followed suit, but as soon as she felt trapped, her survival instincts froze and all she could think of doing was choking on her own or escaping.

As soon as she saw an opening, she chose the latter.

Granted, it probably wasn't her most brilliant idea to separate from the group of survivors so she was wandering halls infested with Mad-Max zombies. But she wouldn't find an exit by waiting around, unless death counted as an exit.

And hey, she got to see a zombie with pulsing and glowing blue goo on her way out, so that was certainly a plus. She was one step closer to bingo. Take that Doc and 10K.

Joy peeked into the next hall, just as empty, dusty, and red as the last few halls. Her breath fogged up her mask, an object meant to protect her from the toxic fumes of the building, but was only causing Joy's claustrophobic panic to rise.

After all, what was worse than having your whole body trapped within a building packed with unkillable Zs? A flimsy gas mask that suffocated you with your own breath.

However, it wouldn't be long now, Joy was starting to come across actual windows that led to the free and outside world. All she needed now was to find a window that wasn't boarded up from the outside. There had to be at least one, there was no way they'd had enough time and resources to cover up every single window of the building.

Sure enough, just two hallways down, Joy got the urge to actually yell out 'bingo!'. A boarded up window with thin streaks of light coming through past its cling-wrap covering.

A window boarded up from the inside but not the outside.

Joy ran directly at it, shoving her hatchet in between the boards to loosen up the nails that kept them in place and using her nails to scratch away at the cling wrap until they started breaking.

She didn't care if she started bleeding or if she ripped her nails straight off her fingers. Joy was desperate to get out by any means possible.

The red walls were starting to close in, advancing with weird blots of what could be paint or blood taking on the faces of horrifying monsters that wanted to swallow her into the walls.
