Joy was humming a random tune again, much to Murphy's annoyance. 10K had let her sleep all during the day, so Joy had much more energy than she should have in the middle of the night. But the only person she was bothering was 10K so according to her, the rest of the buggy had nothing to complain about.
Don't ask what state Joy was currently in, she didn't know. But, it was mostly hot desert even at night, and for once, Joy wasn't feeling cold with her exposed arms. Maybe Joy really was destined to live in a desert.
Warren was driving with a surprising spurt of energy, or perhaps it was just stubbornness that she didn't want to stop in the middle of an open highway in the desert. But again, no one really did look sleepy.
Vasquez in the passenger's seat was still as awake as ever, and even the back row of Doc, Addy, and Murphy specifically (who was usually the one napping) were all awake.
And well, if 10K wanted to sleep, he couldn't really do it because the second his grip slackened on the rafters he'd fall from the buggy.
So at least Joy had some company in her night owl mode.
"Vasquezito. Turn the music up," Contrary to what Joy requested, Vasquez lowered the volume of the mix that had been playing for the past couple of hours. "Buzzkill."
"We need to get off the road." Vasquez ever in a hurry to get his bounty yet again wanted to leave the highway.
"I don't like being so far into Zeros territory. But I guess we really don't have a choice."
"Wait. What is that?" Murphy pointed out at something moving by the side of the highway, that didn't come into view until the headlights of the buggy.
Joy didn't know whether to laugh or cringe, but she was definitely surprised because that was the first time she saw a Z cut up sushi style. A Z cut in half was fine, nothing new, but one cut in thirds certainly one.
"That is a new one."
"I want whatever did that." 10K and Joy spoke simultaneously. Leave it to the deadly couple to want to chop up Zs in thirds.
"Some kind of samurai surgeon."
"That sounds like a badass name for a metal band." Doc seemed to want to refute Joy's words, but then they sunk in, and he hummed in agreement instead.
Ever since Joy agreed not to jump head first in to danger, she'd start making a lot more sense, or maybe it was just that she was getting closer by the day to turning twenty and the older, the wiser you know. Whatever the case may be.
10K handed Joy his rifle to hold before gently pushing Addy to the side and aiming his gun at the passing Z to kill it to keep his oh so sacred mission of eradicating all the Zs in the world going.
