The others dragged away the bounty hunters' bodies and their fake Murphy, cleaned the bar to the best of their abilities, and even swept away all the broken glasses from in between the floorboards.
Joy did nothing but stare.
She'd set up post in a corner of the bar, a table meant for two taken by one. 10K's rifle was gently set over the table, pointed at the dusty window cracked open for some salty air, yet Joy had spent a solid hour trying to close it so it didn't rust the rifle.
If not for her, 10K would fight to find his way back to that rifle; therefore, Joy had to keep it in pristine conditions.
At least the salt in the air did seem to give Joy some reprieve as she failed to close the window because the rifle was doing well—better than she was, in fact.
Because while the rifle shined with its recent polishing, Joy had never felt as dull and empty as she did then.
Usually, it was her chipper nature and humour which landed her with a glass of liquor in hand, making her even more chipper. However, in this case, it was her hollow feelings that kept her in place.
Only moonshine, a shiny rifle, and a ripple of hope that forced Joy's heart to beat, filled the corner of the bar.
Until a gunshot decided to cram the space full of its sound.
Joy sat up straight instantly, carefully sliding the rifle away from the window—she couldn't give it even a scrape if she wanted to keep it safe.
At first, she thought she'd hallucinated the shots, a last echo in her head reminding her of 10K, after all, there was nothing more distinct to 10K than black and his weapons.
But when the windows and walls started to shatter and the walls to chip, Joy realized that wasn't the case.
Couldn't a girl worry herself to death in peace?
Joy collapsed under a window, clutching the rifle close to her chest, face hidden in between her knees. She finally understood why 10K clung to it as much as he did, hugging the rifle was quite therapeutic.
When the shots stopped, Joy dared to take a peek outside—the remaining part of the group was still outside, after all. She saw all of them safely tucked behind the parked trucks the bounty hunters had left behind, all with their guns drawn.
However, the perpetrators of the shots weren't as clear, only dots in the distant horizon—flashing dots thanks to their gunfire.
Granted, they had pissed off quite a few people in the apocalypse—in fact, at least half of the remaining human population had a right to be angry at them. However, it would help to know who exactly they were dealing with.
