It's the passing period before your last class of the day. Your first day back at high school has been very uneventful and boy, are you thankful for it. Normally your first days start out okay but by the time the final bell rings you're running out of the building hoping you'll make it back home safely. Something always goes wrong and you end up getting hurt. You've had your stuff fall out of your arms from tripping over someone's feet or your own and you've fallen flat on your face and your butt multiple times.

This year you've made it through the whole day without a single mishap. Then you're in the hall where your class is and the unthinkable happens. You don't remember it actually happening, but you know that one minute you were walking and the next, you were on the floor with a sharp pain in the back of your head. You faintly hear a voice behind you but can't make out what they're saying. You see a blurred face in front of you and you can only tell that it's a guy. He says something else and then guides you back up the hallway to somewhere and things turn black for a second.

You regain your footing quickly, and trust whoever this guy is that's helping you to take you to the nurse. You blink a few times and your vision gets less blurry. You look over at your savior and you recognize him immediately. It's Calum from your English class. He probably doesn't know you though since you never said anything during class. But then again, he is helping you out right now. You can't think anymore so you just focus on getting to the nurse and holding onto Calum's arm for dear life.

You make it to the nurse and you can now make out talking again. "What happened this year?" Unfortunately she was used to seeing you.

"I don't know, I know that I fell and that my head hurts but I don't know what happened." you say feeling dizzy.

You hold your head and the nurse says, "Here, sit down. I'll get you some ice." Calum guides you to one of the chairs and sits next to you. You try to look at him and focus on his eyes. You blink a lot of times in a row to get your vision back to normal and it pretty much works.

"Can you see me now?" he asks. You look at his chocolate brown eyes, looking back at you with a mixture of worry, concern, and anxiety. You almost melt into a puddle.

"Yeah, pretty well. Thank you so much for bringing me here." you say, "But what even happened? I don't remember anything tripping me or hitting me."

He looks away towards the floor. "Uh...about that. It's my fault."

"What do you mean?" you ask.

"You were walking down the hall and I was at my locker. My backpack was on the floor and the straps were sticking out. You tripped backwards on them and I guess you hit your head a little. I am so sorry. I feel terrible. You probably have a concussion because of me." He hasn't looked at you the whole time he's talked. You know he feels awful.

"It's okay, honestly the first day of school is a curse for me. Something has happened to me every year for as long as I can remember." you say laughing a little at your clumsiness over the years. You tell him a few of the highlights and both of you are laughing as you ice your head and take some pain meds you brought with you just in case. You know yourself a little too well.

"Either way, no matter if this happens all the time or not, I'm still very sorry, Y/N." Calum says sincerely.

"You know my name?" you say. It's only the first day.

"Yeah, why wouldn't I?" he questions.

"It's the first day and I didn't talk except for saying 'here' when my name was called for role."

"Yeah but you have a really pretty name. And a nice voice." he blushes.

"Aw thanks, Calum." You then realize you said his name and cover your mouth.

"Aha! How do you know my name?" he busts you.

"C'mon, you said 'here' and you talked almost the whole class! Someone likes to show off." you joke.

"Ha ha. I happen to really like English. It's my favorite subject. Aside from music." he defends.

"Oh that's cool. I like music too. Do you play anything?"

"Guitar and bass. You?" he asks.

"Impressive. Guitar and piano." you say leaning back in your chair crossing your arms.

"Nice! We'll have to play together sometime." He gives you a warm smile and your heart leaps.

"Yeah for sure." You hear the bell ring and that means you both have been in the nurse's office the whole last period and school is over. The nurse comes back in and asks if you feel up to going home by yourself.

"Let me give you a ride. It's the least I can do, considering." Calum offers.

You're flattered. "Okay, thanks so much." You get permission to leave and you walk to Calum's car.

He's being such a gentleman, still holding onto you "in case you need it" on the way to the car. He opens your door, picks you up, and sets you in the passenger seat. He puts music on but doesn't have it too loud so that your head doesn't hurt worse. You direct him to your house and once you get there and he parks, he doesn't let you move and he goes around to your side to open your door and lift you out.

Calum carries you to your front door despite your objections and he gently sets you down, making sure you have your footing before letting go. "Can you make it inside without me?" he jokes.

"Yeah I'll be okay. Thank you again for the ride. And also for earlier. I know it was your bag I tripped on but really, don't blame yourself. I have a curse on me. If your bag didn't do it for me, something else would have." You give him a hug and he squeezes you comfortingly.

"Well maybe this first day wasn't a total disaster." he says looking down at you.

"Why is that?" you ask.

"We met. You're an awesome person, Y/N. Wanna be friends?" That alone made your day a lot brighter. I mean you wanna be more than friends but maybe one day you'll get there.

"Aw. Of course, you're awesome too. I think I'm gonna go in and sleep until morning. I'll see you tomorrow, Cal." you say hugging him again.

"Alright that's probably a good plan. See you in English, Y/N."

"See you in English, show off." you say sticking out your tongue. He laughs and leaves and you get out your keys and go in your house happy to be back where you're safe. But you think that now you have another place where you know you'll always be safe: wherever Calum is.
