Lucas' POV

I looked up to the plain white ceiling and wished I was at home in little Riley's room looking up at all the stars that I had carefully placed as she directed me, She was so excited that day it was just ours and no one else's. I had been in LA for 6 months for baseball training and I hadn't seen Maya or Riley in three weeks and it was starting to feel like years.

"Huckleberry?" A faint noise said.

"HUCKLEBERRY!" I heard snapping back into reality to see Maya's face through the laptop screen.

"Sorry, hi is everything ok?" I asked.

"Riley can almost spell her name Lucas it was so cute, I wished you could have been here!" She exclaimed making me feel a little more sad that I wasn't with them.

"So when are you coming home?" She asked.

"Well you know I said I'd be back by Riley's birthday?". She nodded looking worried. "Coach expanded the training to a week longer, it's for the younger men, but he said I had to stay too."

"But Lucas she's gonna be so upset." Maya sobbed starting to cry. "And she... We miss you."

"Look honey, we can celebrate her birthday again when I get back." I promised.

"Ok." She smiled. " I've got to pick Riley up from school, we will ring you gain later." She tried hiding how upset she was but I could see right through it.

Maya's POV

We said our goodbyes for the hundredth time since he left and as usual I pretended that everything was fine. I just wanted to be at home with Lucas on Riley's birthday but it seemed like everything was against us and worst of all I had to tell Riley.

Later on...

"Riley honey, come here." I called. She came hopping down the stairs and into the living room.

"I have to tell you something and I need you to be very strong about it." I gestured to the space left in the sofa next to me.

"Ok, mummy I'll be strong." She said sitting next to me.

"Daddy... can't come home for you birthday, but when he gets back we're gonna celebrate it again, all together." I explained.

"Did I do something bad." She started to sob. "I'm so sorry, I'll be good."

"Riley this is not because of you." I firmly stated. "Your daddy loves you so much and when he can come back he will, ok?"

"Yes mummy." She continued sobbing into my arms.

Everyday up till her birthday I wished he would just come walking through that door. I hated seeing Riley so sad. She didn't even seem excited about her party anymore. She just wanted her father.

The day of her party everything seemed a little bit better. She wanted it in a baseball pitch just so she could feel closer to Lucas but she still didn't seem as excited as I thought she would.

"Honey, are you having fun?" I asked her hoping it would be a yes.

"Yeah mummy." She replied making me sigh with relief. "But I just wish that daddy would be here."

"Well we can do this all again when he gets home." I promised her. She smiled at me before rushing off to speak to one of her friends.

I didn't know what to do, I was normally so in control and prepared for everything but this time I couldn't fix it and I hated it, so I just sat in the corner of the field eating cake...

"Arggghhhh!" I heard Riley scream.

I looked up to see her running down the the pitch and out the corner of my eye there he was standing at the gate smiling.

"Daddy!" She yelled jumping into his arms. That feeling that you get in the pit of your stomach that was the feeling I got seeing them finally together again.
