Chris
I laid in bed staring at the TV.
I stroked Ray'vn's hair as she lay asleep. I never imagined it being so difficult to get her to calm down. I was relieved when she finally fell asleep.
Her phone began vibrating suddenly. I picked it up quickly so she wouldn't hear it.
"Hello?" "Why are you answering Ray'vn's phone?" "Seriously? You called to give her an update on Ray, right? Why are you worried about me answering her phone?"
"Exactly! It's Ray'vn's phone and I called to talk to her, not you, so give her the phone." "I would, but she's finally sleeping good after freaking out so much." "Well I'll call her-" "Gimme the phone," Devon ordered.
"Hello?"
"Yeah, I'm here."
"Hey, um where's Ray'vn?"
"She's sleeping. I wish y'all would just tell me what's wrong." Devon sighed. "Well, I mean it's good, but then again it's not." "Devon, get to the point," I said a bit too loud. Ray'vn rustled in her sleep. I squeezed her lightly so she knew I was still here.
"He's unconscious from losing so much blood, but he's stable. It was damn near too late when we found him." "So what's gonna happen to him?" "He's gonna be here a few days." "How long is a few days?" "About a week." I tried to keep my breaths steady. Ray'vn isn't gonna feel good when she hears the news.
"Why are they keeping him there so long?"
"Run some tests, investigate." "What?! It was really that serious?" "Chris, I never saw anything like it. We've dealt with shit worse than this, but it was ridiculous. He tried drowning himself. He used his blood to write messages on the wall. He cut directly on top of a vein, probably punched a hole in the wall when he felt the pain worsen."
Devon continued, but I drifted off.
What was it about us, Ray and me? Do we both really love Ray'vn so much that we'd kill ourselves for our own injustice? Does Ray's extent of suicidal attempts prove that he loves her more than I do?
I felt so confused.
"I have to get back. I'll call your Dad later. You and me need to talk, also. Go get some sleep."
The call dropped; I put her phone down and silenced it.
I moved around some to get more comfortable. No matter how tired I felt, I didn't wanna fall asleep. There was a storm causing severe havic to my brain.
Moments later, Ray'vn began rustling again.
"Mmm," she moaned restlessly.
"Ray'vn, baby, you okay?" She continued rustling, tormented until she finally raised her head. It took her a few seconds to calm down and come to her senses. "Hey," I said stroking her cheek. She took a deep breath. "You okay?" "Yeah, I'm fine." "You sure?" "Mhm. Did anyone call about Ray?"
"No," I said normally.
I didn't wanna lie to her, but she was already freaked out enough from all the drama earlier. I didn't wanna add on any of the news I heard. She looked at the time and grabbed her phone.
Thank god I had turned it off.
I took it from her hands. "No. You had enough of the drama for a while. Just chill, please?" "But Chris-" "Ray'vn," I warned. "Okay, okay." She laid her head on my chest, lining my abs with her finger. "Chris?" "Yeah?" "Can I ask you something?"
