He was quiet. He sat there, staring at the board, his notebook still closed. I nudged him with my knee and he stayed, frozen. He had been this way for a week. He wouldn't text back and he would hide away during lunch. He was here when he needed, and vanished as soon as he was done. I didn't wan't to pry at him. He was sleeping, how well I couldn't tell. And I hoped that he was eating. I wanted to look at his side, see if he was healing but I couldn't get close. Alan finally came back, his throat a sickly green and yellow and his nose was cut. David had it worse. Vic told me that I had broken his nose, and that he had requested to transfer to a school up state. When he told me that I sneered. He was such a coward. I looked at him, and I could feel that he was still swarming with those memories. I had wanted him to tell me what he remembered, what they had said to him. The bell was about to ring and he sat on the edge of his seat, coiled, ready to spring up. As soon as it chimed he bolted out the door. I crammed my stuff into my bag and ran after him. He was quick and darted down the hallway to the gym. I stayed behind so he wouldn't notice me. I heard the doors shut and I quietly opened them to see him slip out behind the parking lot into the smokers cove. He had sat against the wall, and I could hear him softly cry. I walked around the corner and he looked at me, eyes sobering. I sat down next to him, keeping a distance.

"Why are you avoiding me?"

I asked him softly. He wiped his eyes and shook his head like he didn't know what I was talking about.

"I want to know how you're doing. You've been leaving me in the dark and it's scaring me shitless"

"I'm fine."

I looked at him.

"Did they say something to you?"

He shook his head no.

"Then what is it?"

He still said nothing to me, looking at the ground. I stood up, holding my hands out to him.

"Come on."

He just looked at me.

"Let's go."

"Where are we going?"

"Not here."

I pulled him up and put an arm around his shoulders. We walked to my car and I sat there for a moment.

"Now will you tell me? No one can hear you from in here."

Tears rolled down his cheeks. I wiped them away with my thumb.

"That's what I figured. Tell me what's happening. Have you been eating? Have you been sleeping? Did you talk to anyone?"

"No, yes, and no"

I put my hand on his chin and turned his face towards mine.

"You have to eat, you can't just shut down. I know this is hard."

I put the car into drive.

"Where are we going?"

"To get you some food."

"But I'm not hungry."

I looked at him. We drove in silence to the nearest McDonalds. I ordered for us and collected our food. I started off towards my house.

"We aren't going back to school?"

"Nope."

I pulled into the drive and got out. I unlocked the door and waited for him to shuffle up to the porch. Once he was inside, I shut the door and scurried him into the kitchen.  I sat him down at the island and laid a cheeseburger and fries out in front of him.
