Maine woke up to another day. The day is dark and dreary, but she sort of expected it. The sun never seems to shine ever since she got married to Iñigo Sta. Maria three years ago.
She got up from her single bed, ensuring she fixes it with the same meticulous care she was taught to do three years ago. Satisfied that there's no crease in sight, she proceeded to the small bathroom where she washed away last night's cheerless dreams.
She avoided looking at her eyes at the mirror as she's not ready to see what she knows she will see. She gathered herself and left the bathroom to go downstairs to the kitchen and prepare her breakfast. Checking the pantry, she sighed as she took out a box of bran cereal. She hates bran cereal but she knows she needs to eat it to be healthy. She remembered eating so many sweets after they got married. Her husband started telling her that she was getting fat and he's too ashamed to take her anywhere. She wanted to argue that she only gained 10 lbs, but she knows she will not win. She clenched her gut and went on a diet. At least she should be thankful that she has something to eat and maybe someday, she'll learn to love bran.
After finishing her breakfast, she cleaned up and decided to walk around the house. As she was pottering around her small garden, she was surprised to see her husband's car turn into the driveway. It's barely eight o'clock and she's not sure whether he just got home or if he just forgot something. She slowly walked over to the garage to meet him.
Iñigo parked and got out of the car. In the last three years, life has been kind to him, which is the opposite of hers. He still looked the same way as the day they got married—-still impossibly handsome and tall—and he dresses impeccably as well. Maine looked at her baggy shorts and ratty shirt and wished she can look as beautiful as she was before. She was surprised when he abruptly handed her a shopping bag and ordered her to get dressed.
"What?" she whispered in surprised. She didn't know if she heard him correctly.
"I said, get dressed. Has your stupidity affected your hearing?," he replied coldly.
Maine flinched at the insult and hurried off into the house. She quickly opened the bag and squealed when she saw a beautiful sleeveless dress. She usually buys her own clothes but she loves it whenever her husband buyssomething for her.
Quickly stripping and slipping into the sheath dress, she ran her palm down the soft cotton texture. Stepping into the accompanying flats, she hurried to the living room where she found Iñigo looking at the decor.
"Have you actually cleaned this place? I see some dust on top of the TV? You're not doing anything all day, yet you cannot even clean properly?"
Maine bowed her head and looked at her hands. She stopped cleaning daily as she does not see the need. Yes, it used to keep her busy, but it was no use when her husband rarely comes home and she does not have any visitors. She knows better than to argue.
"I'm sorry. I'll make sure to clean it properly next time," she murmured.
Iñigo shook his head and looked at Maine with furrowed brows.
"Put on some makeup. I can't stand to see your plain face. Make yourself presentable."
She hurried off to do what he requested of her. She's puzzled why he's suddenly interested in her and why he's taking her out. She shrugged to herself and started applying her makeup. At least it will take her mind out of her boredom and give her something else to think about.
