When news of the car accident of bestselling children's book author Maine Mendoza broke, many were surprised of the circumstances surrounding the incident. The soft spoken and shy writer was last seen leaving a bar a few minutes prior.
The initial finding was driving under influence.
When she came to, she found herself strapped on a gurney. The nurse who was checking on her vitals asked how she was feeling.
"I feel like a fucking truck ran me over. Then again, I just had a car accident."
"Miss Mendoza—"
"No. No. My name is Divina. Divina Smash."
As investigators delve deeper into the accident, several information they have gathered left them baffled. For one, when Miss Mendoza regained consciousness in the hospital, she claimed that her name is Divina Smash. At first, doctors thought it was disorientation caused by the accident.
He lay on the bed, orienting himself on his environment. Being born blind, he had acclimated into learning his environment by sensing the energy around him. From what he could see in his mind eye, he's in a hospital. He heard the door open, a shuffling of feet, and a hand touching his.
"Ma'am, were my injuries severe?"
The nurse assigned to her room almost screamed in fear when she heard a male's voice coming out of the frail woman's body. His tone lower and his speech polite. So different from the crude woman that she spoke to the previous day.
That incident not only prompted the police to look further into the case but also for doctors to conduct tests and observation on Miss Mendoza. The police found that although she had ingested alcohol, it was not enough for her to be intoxicated and lose control of the car. The pills that were found spilled in the car were prescription for her depression. None of it were taken immediately before or after drinking.
Her home is another matter entirely. There are two users in her computer, Maine and Divina. A studio that one of the investigators found was initially ignored since her father was a painter. That was until one noticed that it had recently been used. An artist with the initial RFJ signed some of the canvases. They connected it to the artist on Maine Mendoza's books. A certain Richard Faulkerson, Jr. Upon further research, no person exists by that name.
At this point, the investigators have decided to bring in medical professionals to look into the matter.
Her IVs have been removed but she is yet to be discharged. Test upon tests have been conducted to and with her while the investigation on the accident continues. She looked up to see another team of doctors visiting her. Closing the book she was reading, she waited for their questions.
"Good morning..."
"I'm Maine Mendoza," she introduced.
"Err... Yes, Miss Mendoza. Are you aware—"
"That I have dissociative identity disorder? Yes."
Maine Mendoza has suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) since she was a child. She said it might have been triggered by the traumatic event when she was five years old. At that time, it was only her and Divina. When she was adopted, a new personality manifested.
For the longest time, it had only been her and Richard. He was the blind artist who did all the artworks in her books. Divina returned after her foster parents died. The girl who used to be quiet, street-smart, and adventurous became selfish and aggressive. She caused the accident in hopes of getting rid of Maine and Richard.
The team of doctors have gone. She was able to leave the hospital. She has returned home but now must face the inevitable. After a deep breath, she opened the door to her psychiatrist's office.
"Maine, so glad of you to visit."
"I'm here to undergo therapy and integrate all of us."
As of this writing, Miss Mendoza has undergone therapy to successfully integrate all of her personalities. She continues to write children's books and has started painting as well.
