Alex is in her apartment when she gets home, whistling while cooking breakfast, seemingly without a care in the world.
Maine slams the door and throws her bag on the couch.
"What are you doing here?"
Alex jumps at the sound of her voice.
"Babe! You're home. Where have you been? I've been here since 8! What does it look like I'm doing? I'm cooking you breakfast! Happy anniversary!" she says with a flourish.
Maine's feels heat creep up her neck as she tries to keep her temper in check.
"Our anniversary was yesterday," she says in a monotone.
Alex laughs. "No, it's not. It's today!"
"Today is June 17. Yesterday was June 16, our an-ni-ver-sa-ry," she puts emphasis on each syllable. "I kept calling you and calling you but, as usual, you didn't pick up. I had a surprise all ready for you but you never came."
Alex turns off the stove and moves closer to her. She looked like she was about to hug Maine but Maine put a hand up.
"DO NOT COME NEAR ME. Explain yourself."
Alex's face falls.
"Babe, I'm so sorry. It completely slipped my mind! I was in Samantha's birthday thing last night! She made us put all our phones in a basket when we got to the club. I forgot to grab mine on my way home so I had no idea you were calling me. I'm so sorry."
If it were any other day, this would have worked on Maine. Alex would have had her eating out of the palm of her hand right about now but Maine had had enough. She couldn't let Alex keep hurting her like this, treating her as if she weren't a priority but a mere afterthought.
"I can't do this anymore, Alex. I'm done."
"What?" Alex looked incredulous.
"You heard me. I'm done."
"Are—are you breaking up with me?"
"Didn't you see this coming? Isn't this what you want?"
"Of course not! Why would I want this? I love you, Maine!"
She moves as if to hug Maine again but Maine shakes her head.
"Please. Don't come near me. Just don't. You've been treating me like dirt for the past few months and you have the nerve to stand there and tell me that you love me?"
"Maine. You know me! Four years na! You know me. You know how I can get. But that doesn't mean that I don't love you."
"Please. I used to know you. The Alex I know won't make me wait days for a fucking reply to a text message. The Alex I know calls me back when I ask her to. The Alex I know doesn't forget anniversaries and birthdays. The Alex I know gives a damn about my feelings. You're not that Alex. I used to know you. But I don't. Not anymore."
"Maine, please..."
"I slept with RJ," Maine blurts out, determined to hurt Alex just as much as Alex hurt her.
"What did you say?"
"I. Slept. With. RJ."
Alex walks over to her and slaps her on the cheek. Hard.
She points a finger in Maine's face.
"I never want to see you again."
She brushes past Maine on her way out the door and slams it as hard as she can.
Maine collapses on the sofa as sobs, once again, wrack her body.
