Chapter 17

When I got back to the apartment I was frantic and l locked the door and set Ean aside in his room. Peter is in the apartment with me.

"Why did they want Ean? What did Eric do?"

"He's becoming a ruthless leader, he's doing things that people don't agree with and they want to hurt him."

"So why don't they hurt him? Why go after an innocent baby?"

"Ean is the only thing Eric cares about. It's the only way to really get through to him."

I ran my hands through my hair, "this isn't fair." I shout. "He's my baby too! I don't understand."

"They're not all that thrilled with you either, they think you cheated during initiation."

We hear a loud bang on the door. I look at Peter scared. He moves closer toward the door. The banging on the door was loud, "open up!" It was Eric's voice. A sense of relief came over me.

Peter opens the door and then locks it when Eric is through.

"What the hell were you doing today?"

"I was going for a walk."

"From now on you and Ean stay in the apartment. Do you understand me?" He says with gritted teeth.

"Is that blood on your face?" I walk up to him and smear my finger on his chin and down to his neck.

"Not my own blood."

"What did you do?" I say mortified.

"Nothing you need to worry about."

My eyes widen. "Eric. What. Did. You. Do?" I say through gritted teeth.

"You started this mess today. I finished it."

"You didn't..." I put my hands on my head.

"I did."

"Son of a..." my voice trails off. "Eric, I didn't get myself into this mess. You-you, what the hell is going on?"

"Don't worry about it. You'll be safe now. More security."

"Eric what the hell? What am I supposed to be in lockdown here? I can't not worry about it, this regards my son too."

"Some people aren't happy with me. I told you the other day that things are changing around here."

"I don't get it. Why? I have to fear for Ean's life now, and my own? All because of you?"

"It needed to be done. Why can't you understand?"

"Because you didn't warn me and I took our son out to be..." my voice trails off again. "Eric, what what would've happened to Ean if you didn't stop that man."

"You were never suppose to leave without telling me." He shook his head. "I'll never make the mistake again. We're going to have plenty more security around."

"Eric, I'm scared."

"It's going to be fine. No one will hurt you. Not on my watch."

I shake my head and walk away from him. Dauntless isn't safe anymore, not for me and not for Ean. "What have you been doing that the people are so willing to hurt our baby?"

"I don't think you should know. The information will further endanger you."

"The whole faction knows what you did and because I'm like your prisoner in here I don't get to know what's going on out there. You don't think I should know, or you think if I know I'll think just like everyone else and turn on you?"
