Liat took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
'I was an orphan. I was taken in, by a man named Zan Axton, a little over sixteen years ago. I've never known who my parents are or were,' Liat spoke softly; her eyes shuttered, her face blank of emotion.
'But you want to know.' How did Jedi know this when she barely knew herself? She wasn't sure. But he was right.
'Yes. I do want to know who they are. I want to know why they abandoned me.'
'Abandoned? I thought you said orphaned, which implies they're dead.'
'I never knew, but it was easier to explain as orphaned, and it didn't sound so bad,' she defended herself.
Silence descended over them once more.
'I always called Zan 'Father,' even after I knew he wasn't really. I always tried to be the daughter he'd never had. He died, you know. In the war.'
'I'm so sorry,' Jedi responded automatically, the way everyone did these days. 'I have to think,' he said as he stood and walked away from the campfire and into the shadows.
