'Liat,' Zan whispered as he stepped toward the figure standing near the edge of the clearing, a defiant tilt to her head and obvious questions in her eyes.
As he reached her, he took her into his arms, burying his head in her coppery-gold hair. 'Liat,' he whispered. 'My daughter, my daughter.'
But she pulled back.
'Why did you leave? Why did you allow Em and me to believe that you were dead? What good would that do us?'
'Liat, you don't understand,' Zan ran a hand through his greying hair.
'Then help me to understand.'
