Jedi turned back to the fire, facing her.
Liat saw the tears glistening in his eyes, and her heart skipped a beat.'My best friend growing up was a year older than me. He got his Gift a year before me,' Jedi's voice broke, and he caught his breath.
He reached up to wipe a tear off his cheek.
'He went into battle, and he died within two days of fighting,' Jedi shook his head, his gaze lowering.
How could she say something without getting the same response she'd given him?
'I'm so sorry. He must have meant a lot to you,' Emerson whispered from behind her.
'He did, Emerson,' Jedi allowed himself to smile.
But then his smile faded once more.
'I don't want anyone else to have that loss,' he raised his head to look into Liat's eyes.
His face was determined. 'What do we do to stop the war?'
