Althea froze.
Her son, her only son, Jedi, was dead.
He was Lost. He was never coming back. She'd never again see his ready smile, hear his easy laugh, ruffle his long brown hair.
A tear slipped down her cheek, falling off her chin and landing on her maroon dress.
'How?' she whispered.
Liat closed her eyes, the scene once more flashing past moment by moment.
'Quinn hated me. He saw me and was about to throw a dagger at me. But Jedi tackled him and Quinn stabbed him.'
The room was silent.'I'm sorry. I tried to save him,' Liat whispered.
'It's okay,' Althea responded, almost automatically.
She was a Healer, had been given the Gift of Healing, but she wasn't given the chance to try to heal her son.
'He meant a lot to me,' Liat murmured. 'I miss him already.'
