Liat could only stand and watch as Zan fought Delta.
Yet she smiled as she saw that Zan's expert swordsmanship was far superior to Delta's.
She watched as Zan's sword struck home, saw Delta stumble back and land on the leaves, motionless.
'Thanks,' she whispered her gratitude, but then noticed the attacking band retreating back up the hill, saw the number of dead and wounded they'd simply left behind in the clearing.
Liat walked back into Zan's hut and grabbed her pack of supplies.
'Where are you going?' Zan asked, his eyes filling with fear from the doorway.
'I'll follow them. It's what I was trained to do. I was part of the reconnaissance team. I'll let you know what they're planning.'
Then she paused.
'If they're planning anything,' she added.
'Then take this with you,' Zan offered a long and narrow leather bag.
Liat, curious, took it and opened it, finding a new supply of arrows.
'I thought you might need them after you used most of yours on that lot,' Zan gestured over his shoulder in the general direction the force had disappeared in.
