Zan watched as his daughter, moving silently, walked into the trees, almost instantly blending in and disappearing from view.
She was the reason he was trying to end the War.
Emerson came up next to him.
'She'll always do her own thing,' he whispered, placing his hand on his father's shoulder.
'I know,' Zan smiled sadly. 'Its just humbling to realise that I won't be able to protect her forever.'
Emerson didn't know how to reply, so he just tightened his grip on Zan's shoulder, hoping the mere pressure would comfort him.
Zan shook his head to dispel the melancholy feeling that had descended in Liat's departure.
'Come on, son,' he turned to two of them back to his hut. 'Let's prepare some basic planning for a counterattack.'
The comment earned a smile from Emerson.
Those smiles were rare.
