Liat ran.

Like a coward, she ran from her problems instead of facing them head on.

She'd run from Rebel conscription.

She'd run from the Circle's threats.

She'd run from her fear of Quinn Justus.

She had always run from her problems.
And she probably always would.

Shaking her head to clear it of her emotions, Liat saw a double-trunked pine that would provide her a ladder up the incline to her left.

She scaled the tree.

Sitting atop the peak, she detangled the necklace from her fingers and draped it around her neck.

It seemed fitting.

Liat now wore her mother's necklace.
