LGBT+ people are famously underrepresented in television. However, that is on the path to change. I mean, think about it. The Fosters, Orange is the New Black, Switched At Birth; all of those have LGBT characters. That's great! There are movies about us, actually good ones, and we often find our community represented in at least some way in TV.
Unfortunately, that's usually the end of their characters. There are exceptions in some places, such as Aaron in the Fosters or Deadpool in, well, Deadpool, but in many cases, a character ends at the fact that they're gay or trans. It becomes their entire being. It is a huge thing, and it's not to be taken lightly, but we are so much more than our genders or sexualities.
I am so much more than just transgender, asexual, panromantic man. I am an artist, an author, a musician. I am a goofy, dark, pessimistic teenager. I am a bookworm. I am a good student. I am a nervous wreck about most things. You don't get any of that if you only focus on my gender, sexuality, and/or romantic orientation.
It is amazing that we have so much representation now, but we still need better representation in a lot of ways. I know there are brilliant, talented people out there, LGBT or otherwise, who could write better stories. I know I'm trying to. I have nonbinary characters and trans binary characters in the book I'm writing, which I do plan on publishing.
If you have the talent to write plays, stories, and/or films about LGBT characters that are more than just LGBT characters, please do. At least try. I believe we owe it to our community. I believe we owe it to ourselves.
That's all I really have to say.
(Side note: Have any of you seen Pride? It's a movie that came out in 2014 that centers around the events of the mining strike in the eighties. It follows a group of people who form a group called LGSM, Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, and it's an actual historical thing. I've done a lot of research and it's all really awesome. I definitely recommend it.)
